a noob question about 3D modeling

ummmm I was wondering how the whole process of you guys creating these wonderful 3D drawings is done.

You are using apps like Vectorworks and then importing that info into programs like Maya?

For example , all these wonderful interiors in the gallery.

You create the plans with a CAD program then render it then add textures using programs like Maya or 3DSM?

How do you know how far you have to go with the CAD program and how do you create all that designer furniture that sits in these 3D interiors?

Thanks

thats correct.

the general route is modelling in cad then texturing/rendering in a 3d app.

vectorworks to maya is fine. i go from autocad to c4d.

stuff like designer furnature has allot of organically shaped bits and curvey bits in it, so you'll generally need a 3d app for that as it will allow easier NURBS and poly modelling techniques.

What is FileLink?

I've been using FormZ for 8 years and never heard of it.

FileLink is a Max extra that links DWG files into Max. I create my model in FormZ, save it as a DWG, link it into max, and set the surface styles. If the model changes, I resave the DWG, and hit update in Max. All of the surfaces, UV coordinates, lighting, extra... are still perfectly. It really allows any modeling app to work smoothly in conjunction with Max.

I model everything in MAX. I have yet to find anything I modeled in AutoCAD that I can't model better and faster in MAX. Plus, you get to delete that extra step of importing your model and crossing your fingers. You also open up a bunch of material mapping options that you didn't have before.
