VIZ 2005, does it have light tracer?

Hello all,

My firm is planning on buying max 6 or viz 2005. I am very familiar with max 6's light tracer/ GI. As I was reading the comparison document on Viz's website it said Viz 2005 does not have light tracer as an advanced lighting plugin. A few pages later it said that it does have skylights.

So whats up? Does viz 2005 have it or not?

I enjoy the easy/fast results of GI- radiosity is sometimes just too time consuming.

My last question is how does the radiosity between max6/viz compare? are they identical as far as quality/settings?

Thanks for any help,

Chuck

I don't use any of them as my experience with Light Tracer left me quite disappointed. It looked great, but took forever to render. You have real patience if you can wait for LT to render!

You should think about Mental Ray, which comes with both.

VIZ 2005 does not have Liht Tracer, but just like VIZ 4, it can render Skylight (turn on Cast Shadows, set Rays/Sample = 8).

An alternative is to use mental ray and enable Final Gather - it'll be the same as using Light Tracer.

thanks guys-

so the mental ray has GI right, not just radiosity? i know MR has "radiosity" (photons right?), but i'd like something i can just turn on and see diffused shadows without messing around with processing radiosity...

i have played with MR, but the settings are a bit overwhelming at first, especially when i know max radiosity. it does look very nice though...i'm assuming viz ships with the MR tutorial...

thanks again

mental ray has GI, but mental day does not support the daylight system. Skylight is only supported in Final Gather, and does not generate photons, so the sky will not contribute to the GI solution.

So, right now, the GI solution in MR will be different than the Radiosity capabilities if you want Indirect Lighting - you can use it for internal lighting, or with "fake" sunlight, but not with a physically based sunlight and sky.

Chuck, the answer I'm going to post was already answered plenty before, but its just so true, ans especially in your case.

VIZ + any 3rd party renderer will still be cheaper than MAX. You get speed, quality... and most likely better help and support when it comes to render settings.

my 2c.
