Jason Matthews
Working in 3d doing buildings is good fun. But what happens when you have to create everyday things? So, my question is this: How do I create a drill bit with teeth in the shape of a cone? I usually model in cad, but as you can expect, it is a difficult to model something like that. The problem is getting the teeth to wrap around the cone correctly. Thanks in advance. -Jason
William Alexander
TEETH???????? Tip & fluting? or is this a hole saw? Standard "Drill Bit"...... Start with a polyline using 1" "line" segments, drawn verticle to world UCS using the "front view (ucsII). Using the verticle polyline vertices snap & draw 1" polyines "top" (ucsII), set your polar setting to 20 degrees, rotate each polyline 20 degrees as they are drawn, I set the angle and typed the distance into the command line. Draw a 3d poly using the endpionts of the previously drawn polys to create a helix form line. Draw a circle for the body of the bit, draw a circle for the "flute". Extrude the body circle using the hieght of the first verticle polyline. Extrude the flute circle using path and the 3d polyline. I just copied with a base point the flute solid pasted on top of the exisitng and rotated 180 degrees, array and mirror work also. Subtract the flute solids from the body solid. GO to the front view and draw a closed polyline for the shape of the tip, negative form, see attached jpg. Revlolve (command line) the tip poly line. Align the new revolved solid with the starting piont of the first verticle polyline, 0,0,0 to drill bit (relative). Subtract the revolved solid from the body 5 minutes CAD time - 15 minutes to create response and mini tut. You can solid model the rest of the bit. You can also fillet or chamfer the top of the flute solid for a finished look before copy and rotate. If you need a very smooth version you have to add more line segments to the 3d poly line. These are true line segments and will not acis smooth when importing into viz and max for example. Hope you looking for a "Drill" bit and this is helpful.
