Firestation WIP

Recommended Posts

HI-

This is a WIP of a firehouse, I am just looking for crits and comments. I am not too keen on the view, but unfortunately the client wants an aerial type shot. The ambulance on the right side is still being tweaked, that is why the mapping is messed.

Thanks!

The angle is really playing havoc with the quality of this shot. I would say everthing else about it looks pretty good. Maybe try lowering the angle some while still maintaining an aerial look, right now we are just seeing way too much roof. A couple of other very minor crits would be maybe you could add a vehicle or two on the pavement in front, and seeing the perfectly mowed lawn growing right up under the background foliage is a little unrealistic. Maybe you could blend the grass into some sort of a dirt texture back there. Also, I think the colors look a little bland and washed out. A little extra contrast could give it some more pop. Good Luck!

Your road surface is great, the background is, too, exept you need some mountains, far fields, in behind the trees. The horizon is higher. Your grass is good. How about a few squirrels for the lawn?

How about you turn the ambulance around? How its facing now leads the viewer out of the picture, lining up with the building's right wing. Move the two cars in the left parking area one space right each, the tree shadow will look better on the ground and it opens up the view a bit. Is the garage door opening tall enough to allow the engine out--without losing the lights?

The roof has no contrast and the texture it too small, even if its aaccurate it looks small.

Pick, pick, pick.

I like it alot, I would agree with the horizon issue, some indication of mountains or another faint tree line would help.

Also, it looks a bit like the image does not have enough 'perspective' to it the building almost looks a bit warped to me as if it was not in a perspective mode at all.

Also, it appears that there is no way for pedestrians to access the walkways or parking lots from the front driveway. Some pedestrian activity (and maybe a mascot dog) would be nice.

I don't have an issue with the grass being 'mowed' behind the building and out under the trees (they have to do something between fires :) Perhaps a picnic area, pavilion, or exercise trail could be indicated.

Please post again,

Ok..made some changes. Lowered the camera a little, changed the groundplane under the background trees, upped the contrast.

There is in fact no way to get from the front drive to the sidewalks. That is how the engineer designed it, so that is how it is portrayed. I don't really think there would be much use for it anyways, the only vehicle on the front drive would be the firetrucks, and they park in the garage.

let me know what you think!

I hate to say it, but you were much better off with the first angle. The new one has the roof close off the lawn behind the building, has the piney tree completely cleve the roof.

OK I see you tried the stuff I suggested, good boy, but the roof still needs more contrast. Come on, its your largest structural element in the picture--show it.

Overall, I think your ground plane, the pavement need to be darker. Its too much like the building in shade.

Ah a limon banana flavored engine, Model color or Fire Comapany's apparatus color? Yuck-even if it's more visible than red, but I have a tainted opinion anyway.

If the client wants the ambualnce parked there OK.... or try a pick-up or minivan or SUV (bannana) with the FD or a logo in plain view, being a command or inspection vehicle, looks more plausible- it may solve a couple problems. Now that I think about it you can put a vehicle number on top of the ambulance, getting to be a very common practice. The tops of most box type fire appratus are really boring-ugly may & not be the best choice for a birds eye type view, imho. >>edit- they normally back emergency vehicles into parking position-sat on my reply for a while sorry

Adding some lines, for the apparatus to align with for backing in may give the tarmac approach some sense of movement and purpose, not just a concrete expanse opening up to the world.

Yea and just for giggles- basketball hoop, lawn chairs, grill, horse shoe pit, you know all of the required equipment for the job- maybe the "probie" out cutting the grass?

The engine looks like it's rolling out of the bay getting ready to take out the overhead door, not up the whole way (a practice that would keep the overhead door companies very profitable). Back it up about 1 ft +, where it is now gives the feeling that the depth of the bay is to shallow for the apparatus- not what you want to convey, long history of Architects shorting depth for the equipment.

The scene overall looks good!

I'm not trying to be way out there, but the illustration, as possible, should have some hooks or "correctness" for the intended users. Lends credibility to the scene and most important the design.

Personally I like the first image better than the second :)

I think the faded streaks on the driveway are VERY distracting now. They were not in the first image which had a very nice driveway.

Also, some more comments about the ambulance/fire truck. The ambulance is to close to the curb (both front and side) in my opinion and why wouldn't it be inside where it is protected and cool? The fire truck even with its new color, kind of looks like a round 1950's version. I would maybe try to find a newer design on the net (http://www.3dcafe.com) or just put the ambulance inside.

Almost there, like it alot and the image has real potential.

Good luck,

I suppose the ambulance could be inside, just wasn't sure about it. I looked all over the net for a fire truck, and while I found quite a bit that were newer models, they cost $$ and the one that I am using was free, so there was good reason for the older looking one.

I will give the image one more shot--and then I need to quit listening to you all! :p

Thanks for the help.

how about changing the position of your sun. the angle is fine, but having the sun at or near to the same rotation of your camera typically is not the best place. if you rotate it one way or the other, u will get better contrast between the 2 sides of the building, and you will be able to read all of the little details you put into it. you will read lights next to dark, which will make things 'pop' better.

For those of you still interested, here is the final. I changed the sun angle as CHG suggested, added some more contrast to the roof, and parked the ambulance inside (per client). Oh yeah, switched back to original view.

Thanks for the help!

Looks great. The tree shadows on the left are a little distracting, but add contrast to the front drive.

Don't you just love clients that have to have an aerial view. The most un-natural view.

Nice work though, great progression.

Kudos for all the improvements. I think switching back to the original view was the right thing to do now that the roof has some more definition in it. The whole thing is much more liveley now. Any other critiques would just be nitpicking at this point. Congrats!
