Tip on displacement maps *please*?

I have an architectural building I'm working on that has a lot of hand stacked flat rockwork. I wanted to apply a displacement map so that the edges appear to have an unsmooth surface. Can anyone lead a n00b to how this is accomplished?

Also, I REALLY want to do this with the windows as well, just a super small amount so that the glass won't appear to be perfectly flat, but that it will have a slight irregular surface for reflection purposes.

Please, any pointers are greatly appriciated...

seems to me that you should be using a noise map in the bump map properties ionstead of a displacement map. Try applying noise to either the mesh itself or to the bump map in ur material properties. I think it would work a lot better for u

Hi,

Yes I have a bump map of the brick in grayscale and it really brings out the mortise/joints well. However I want the whole texture to seem like it's 'rolling' or irregular.

Am I going about this wrong? I need to keep the bump map that I have already placed there, however it may work for the glass?

Help muh.... :)

I had a similar project with the rockwork and tried a lot of different things. I used a bit of noise and a displacement map. To create the displacement map I opened the rockwork bitmap and traced over it painting black on the gaps between the rocks and filled white everywhere else. It produced some ok results, but you might have some better luck. Give it a try anyway.

I've attached a copy of the bitmaps I used.

For the glass you could try using a noise modifier on your glass, Put that on the verts that forms up your window, and use it to displace the verts abit in the right axxis, though you should make it planar/flat again manually it can produce nice results, check out the following link, its explained more in-depth,

I thought about this method originally, but I don't like it, I want a surface such as that of a rolling river, the swells if you can picture it. That's what I want on the surface of the glass.

Surely someone has done this?
