well,

i know of the illustrator plug-in from hotdoor. it's called cad-gate. it allows you to import dwg/autocad files into illustrator which can then be saved as .ai files. so you'll need illustrator for this.

I usually do a very weird procedure...Select all in AutoCAD and CTRL+C. Then, on Corel Draw or Illustrator, I "Paste Special" and select Windows Metafile. That makes the soft recognize the entities as lines. Works great when taking plans and sections/elevations to Corel for further adjustments or some post production.

i do not have illustrator.

CV - what format cad files will illustrator 9 or above recognise?

I usually "save as" v14 just to make things easy.

I have 2002 here and Illustrator CS opens them fine. Should be the same for Ill 9 if I remember.

Strat, simply add a plotter in Autocad. It's the "Adobe Postscript Level 1.pc3" plotter. Then, plot from Autocad and select the "Adobe Postscript Level 1.pc3" plotter from the list. Adjust the page layout as necessary, then click the OK, or Plot button, or whatever it is (I'm on 2005 and mine is simply "OK"), and then it will pop up a save dialogue box. Tell it where you want to save the file (it will create an EPS file), and then send the EPS file off to your client that is using Adobe Illustrator, and let them open it themselves and save it as the AI file(since you don't have Illustrator). Opening the EPS file in photoshop will immediately rasterize the file when you open it, destroying the vector data (EPS is still vector). Exporting to Illustrator from Photoshop will export nothing, since by simply opening the EPS file in photoshop, you did not create any paths ("Export Paths to Illustrator"), but instead you created a rasterized image.

Hope this helps. I believe this method will also retain lineweights, should you be using them in your drawing.

cheers Eric.

i know all about the AutoCAD eps creating as i made a thread describing it last year :p

but i think maybe it's my client who's dopey. he cant seem to do anything with my EPS files.

what im now doing is saving from acad as a dxf, then importing into Rhino, then saving that out of Rhino as a AI file. seems to be working so far.....

LOL!! Sorry, didn't realize that you'd posted a thread on the EPS/PC3 method. I guess I must have learned the EPS method from you some time ago!!

Kind of makes you wonder what a person with Illustrator is doing with it if they can't manage to import an EPS file.
