hi all

I received very complicated plans for complex mall job.

the problem is that I,m having a problem understanding the structure of the whole bulding .

I,m really us to small project and this one is very complicated

now how do you guys go about modeling complicated project like hotel or sky scraper

do you usually ask for plans and elevating or do get more help from the architect who design the project

I really don,t want look unprofisional as this the first big job for me

any suggestion thanks

this usually calls for experiance.

if the client has handed you the drawings then that usually means the basic form of the building atleast has been resolved, if maybe not the finer details. in other words, unless the building is in it's very early design stages the architects drawings will be pretty much complete.

if this is the case then it's down to your experience and knowledge of reading and visualising the drawings. this is all down to experiance.

as i say to peeps who want to come into the arch-vis industry, no matter how good an artist or architect you are, you MUST have the ability to visualise and construct and see the completed structure in your head from reading the technical drawings before you attempt to put mouse to mouse matt.

i'd suggest looking at the plans/elevations/sections some more. it will take time. keep on looking at them and trying to work them out. make simple pencil sketches to help you out.

Also ask the client if he has any artists impressions or perspectives he can give you.

I sometimes find these 100 times more valuable than complicated architects drawings when drawing up large schemes, particulally where time is of the essence. If you think about it, the perspective artist was in the same possition you are. but he did it soon enough.

then start drawing from the base up. allot of what you cant visualise will automatically fall into place when you start the modelling process.

Hi Omar,

Were you provided with a site plan that locates the structure? If you spend some time studying the plans, you can use the site plan to construct a "key" plan and locate the various areas of the building. Key your plan by locating sections and elevations. Then you have an overall impression of the shape of the building or group and can break it down into more manageable pieces.

hi There Omar

can you post up a screen shot of some part of the project?

sometimes starting out with some basic shapes can really help

then continue to modify the "mass" of the building

as your continue to study the plans maybe will help

i usually start by extruding from the floorplan of the bldg

in a separate file (then xrefing it into the site plan later)

i like to insert the elevations around the mass bldg

then draw around the windows and door and extrude into the mass

then subtract using booleans, or

use the elevation(s) draw an outline extrude then boolean the openings

and then place these in the proper orientation where they belong on the

floorplan just to get started

sounds like you are going to learn a LOT on This project

have Fun (to quote The Ted)

take Frans excellent advice. LOOK for PATTERNS

model a small part of the project and see where that

reoccurs in other places, horizontally or vertically

can it be referenced or instanced in other bldgs ?

are you doing an exterior (only)? or do you need to do the Interior, as well?

if you are doing interior work then look for the floor plane heights, put in slabs

and then add some walls and see if there are transitions, stairs and ramps

start small Think Big, or better yet like Strat says Think Big first and then

get started

Omar,

Another approach, if you desire, is to get some trace paper and trace the elevs, plans & sections. While you trace consider the spacial relations & possible modeling and material techniques, make notes on your tracings. You can then over lay the traced sheets make point to point connections in your mind. Kind of story boarding it.

Just as an Architect sketches to develop and solidify a design so can the 3D connections between hand, eye & mind be made by tracing. Arch-200 'buy tracing paper & trace trace trace'-paraphrase Prof Greenstreet UWM circa 1984.

i was just fooling around, did i make a mistake?

"Wisdom comes from Knowledge,

hey do you quote something (i cant figure out how to quote myself)

o yea the mistake Thing i just revised it to be "Trying and fooling around"

i've been told that i am trying, very trying

but i really do like fooling around that is how i learn

hands-on experience = making mistakes

The Tracing Paper is a great Idea to use

i never did get to go to architectural school

someone who was supposed to pay me for my early-model '55 Chevy pickup Truck

ending up stealing it and never paid me so i lost out getting any formal schooling

everything that i have learned has been from "Trying and Fooling around"

and from reading the newsgroups/forums and from asking questions and from

offering my own answers (and finding out there were better ways to do That)

ok Omar is any of This helpful?

let us know how Things are going

Thanks
