Chris_Mac
Hi everybody, I have recently redesigned my website. I am hoping to move to London soon and I am starting to look for a new job.... so I have built an online portfolio with examples of my work, contact details, info, etc... http://www.realise3d.com I'd be interested in hearing what you all think of the site, the content and what could be improved ... I'd also be interested in hearing what you think my job prospects are on the strength of the work displayed. Please bear in mind that all 3d work which appears on the website has been modelled and rendered in FormZ. Therefore I have been unable to use GI or radiosity - all lighting is 'fakiosity'. Animation in form Z is limited to just a moving camera (no moving objects), therefore anything in the animations which is more complex than a moving camera has been achieved using After Effects. Lastly, while I do have some experience using Max and Lightwave, I have worked mainly in Form Z for the last two years. Do you think this shall be a hindrance to me (as most companies seem to expect an extensive knowledge of 3d studio max), or will most companies employ people on the strength of their 3d skills. The website is still a work in progress but is ver nearly finished, however I will take on board all comments made... thanks for your time. akropol2000
it's pretty good ... Although I didn't like the noise from moving mouse over every button , it's very loud and annoying ... I would change it to something smooth... or at least not that loud ... I like navigation , very simple and clean. And I loved your demoreel specially that commercial project that you did with sun going down ... very cool

The project you liked was actually a rendered animation of my entry for the cgarchitect challenge no.5! Thanks for the crits.

mbr
Very nice. The website is good, although from a web designer's view I'd say it looks a lot like The Designer's Republic stuff from a few years ago, as well as countless others. But that's not a problem, imo, it works and looks creative without seeming too much of a web designer's site (make any sense?). Showreel was excellent! I am very impressed you did all that with FormZ. I am using it at the office where I am working now and have found it a little tricky compared to Max, although I've been able to get some decent results. Would you mind sharing how you did the outlined homes? The one with the layers that looks abstract? Did you use that plugin for FMZ, sketch-something? I'd love to hear how you did it with FMZ. I'd go so far as to say that it's one of the best websites in this business I've seen. It's good in it's own right, but great by this fields standards. Good job. mbr
Oh, I should note that I don't have speakers plugged in at the office, so I couldn't say about the sound. Imo, though, it's tricky to get sound right. Better to have nothing or something really, really subtle then something distracting (not to mention after a while, the same sound can really get annoying). Did you use that plugin for FMZ, sketch-something? I'd love to hear how you did it with FMZ. In my opinion the sketch plug in for Form Z is sh.... well, it's not very good - I wouldn't advise it. I did the watercolour effect with standard photoshop filters. The outline was created by exporting a hidden line rendering as an illustrator file (thus retaining the vectors) to our offices 2d drafting package PowerCADD. Then I applied a plug in that is available which will give the 'squiggle' effect. It's part of WILDTOOLS, which is a plug in for PowerCADD, which is a mac only drafting package. Thanks for the kind words.

IC
Noises aside, it's an excellent site and your work is outstanding (can't believe it's rendered in Form Z!) Don't see any need for you to switch software.

tcorbett
The renderings look good Chris, but a few suggestions on the website: 1. There is a little too much movement. I understand why you built the movement, but sometimes a simple quick-fade can be just as effective. 2. Your font makes your descriptions a little difficult to read - a fat black font on a white background is a big contrast. Perhaps a non-bold dark gray font? 3. Flash, while making your site look slick to visitors, also makes it invisible to search engines. If you want people and customers to find your work, consider creating an HTML version of your site, and offer it as a "Non-Flash" version. This way the search engines will index your content, and your clients can find you. Good luck!
