has anyone had any luck making a good, "shiny" copper? i have a project coming up that's going to have a copper roof and flashing, and i can't seem to get the material right. i've searched the forums, tutorials, etc, and haven't seen anything that helps. if anyone has any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks!

oh, and i'm using viz, if that helps.

I thought I had an example of a copper roof I did once, but I guess I lost it...

Something that worked well for me was to use your main copper color that you want - just a solid color. Add a small amount of reflectance to it. Then, what gave me the best results was to add some sort of fluffy clouds map in the diffuse slot. Then I turned that down so slightly that you can only see a hint of it in the material. So when you render it, it doesn't look like a map of clouds in the copper, but looks like reflection, and variation in the copper itself. Just play with UVW mapping until you find something that looks right.

thanks for the advice! i'll play around with it a little more and post my efforts later. unfortunately, i've been sidetracked by other (more pressing) jobs for the day. the copper is for a project that i won't be seriously into rendering for a few more weeks; i'm really just planning ahead so i don't end up scrambling to make something work at the last minute. as far as the patina goes, i think it's going to be a bit of a "before" and "after" thing...i don't think we're going to use a pre-aged copper to start out with. and i'm pretty happy with my patina settings.

as a side-track, is anyone here familiar with the type-variant house by vincent james? i would love to see that place in about 15 years...what a beautiful building.

anyway, thanks again. timmatron, i'll give that a shot as soon as i can, and post what i end up with.
