New guy questions...

Hi All-

I admit right off the bat, I am new to drafting. Been helping out a friend of mine by picking up some of his side work, which involves just throwing paper floor plans into autocad, where he then does remodels. So nothing huge there.

Anyhow, I met a guy locally (my friend noted above is out of state) that does some killer architecture work, and needs someone who can be a very independent draftsman. BUT, he uses vectorworks... and an older version, at that. Ugh. I like using the CLI in autocad.

I am so new that learning a new program shouldnt be that bad, but, I am worried about placing myself into a less useful point, industry wise. I dont see a vectorworks forum here so I am asking here in the AC forum- is this a bad move? I havent the experience to know.

I own my own business as PC/network consultant that makes good money, I just want some dafting on the side, for fun, and obviously good pay. I am just worried about working myself out of the industy by using some archaic program.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys. And again, I am totally new to this shindig, I apologize for my niavete in advance.

You could look at it as broadening your horizons as far as knowledge goes. For a long time I thought some of the other CAD programs where just as good if not better than Acad for architecture. In the last 5-7 years I think ACAD took the lead especially if you consider ADT. I still use DataCad once in a while, it has some macros that make modeling sloped roofs easier than ADT (3.3 anyways). Now you could post another CAD program on your resume. But, ACAD is the industry standard and with the apparent strong integration with VIZ and Max it probably is the road to travel from my limited perspective.

learning a different cad package whien youre starting out is a good thing. I've been using acad WAY too long to even consider learning a new one although I always wanted to have a go a microstation.

just think of it as another feather in your cap.

oh and btw, a lot of mac based arch firms use vectorworks
