furniture design & productions question

Hello,

Do any of you design furniture as well or have you ever considered designing furniture?

How do you go about getting it produced?

Are there companies that catalogue and distribute furniture from independent designers and architects?

Are there special requirements for the modelling?

What kind of investment is involved?

Thank you, any help is appreciated.

1. Find clients that will contract you to design.

2. Find local custom furniture / cabinet shop to make them.

3. Look for the local / regional stores and shops that specialize in handcrafted furniture. Talk to the buyers and or shop owners.

4. Send me a design and I will give you a quote:rolleyes:. Shipping not included  .

I don't know if thats what your looking for? We do most of our cabinets and furniture in house, custom one of a kind stuff. Most of the time the cool stuff most production shops won't touch anyway.

more pragmatic questions:

1) what types of 3D files are commonly used?

2) do the 3D designs need details like dovetails, mortises, etc?

3) what is a typical furniture "run". 5 pieces? 25? more?

4) any examples of one-off pieces and their associated cost?

obviously i've been interested for a while. any info greatly appreciated.

We are sending our designs to a laser cutter via autocad drawings. The more 3D stuff will most likely also be cut via some sort of automated machinery, like CNC. From the pieces, we'll have someone with experience making furniture (ask around at architecutre/interior design offices, most will have people they use for custom jobs).

This way ensure that we can produce more quickly. Once the places have set up for the cutting, they can store the settings and do it again at a cheaper cost.

I love the high tech machinery!!
