Thoughts on Spec

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Im looking to build a new machine and I was hoping to get some thoughts on this spec (see the screen grab).

It's to be used for all the normal stuff, rendering, photoshop etc etc.

Looking for some good power and hoping it will last for a good few years.

Let me your thoughts! any bits I should swap??

Cheers

I see water cooling here. Is this for heavy overclocking use? If it is, I'd point you at the page Kippu linked to but I'd suggest the Asus Crosshair IV 890FX motherboard, and the appropriate water cooler. You shouldn't have much trouble getting that over 4GHz and it's 6 cores.

ok so I have reviewed my spec a bit;

Intel I7 930 2.8GHZ 8MB Cache Socket 1366 Retail Box Processor

ASUS P6X58D Premium iX58 Socket 1366 Dual Gigabit LAN 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

2 x (12GB total) Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3 Memory CL9(9-9-9-24) for i7 motherboards

Antec P183 Case - GunMetal Grey Super Mid Tower

Antec CP850 850W Modular PSU

Corsair CWCH50-1 Cooling Hydro Series H50 High-performance CPU Cooler

PNY Quadro FX 1800 768MB DVI Dual Display Port Out PCI-E Graphics Card

Western Digital WD2500AAJS 250GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 8MB Cache – OEM Caviar Blue

Western Digital 1TB Hard Drive SATAIII 7200rpm 64MB Cache - OEM Caviar Black

Samsung SH-S223 22X DVD RW DL & RAM SATA - OEM Black

I do want to overclock slightly to get the best performance out of the machine. I have added a 1TB HDD but I this will only be used for working on animations locally as all other storage will be kept on the server.

Thoughts please!

Why the Quadro? It's not nearly as powerful as the Radeon you had in there before. Also, this need for 12GB of RAM is taken a bit out of proportion. Get the 6, and if it's not enough, get the other 6 later.

If you want to overclock "slightly" there's no need for water cooling. Though that water cooler is easy to use and it does get you some bragging rights.
