Stan Zaslavsky
hi Eddie, that's exactly the reason why i like the term 'artist impressions" - it implies something more than just a mechanical method of simulating an artificial environment cheers
Professor
These are all good suggestions for job titles. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the idea is to come up with a better name for our industry. My opinion is that "our industry" exists on the periphery of, or juncture between, many industries (Architecture, Engineering, Game, Film, Advertising, etc). 3d, Visualization, Simulation, Illustration, or Digital Art are good general descriptions of what we do within our industries. Fortunately, 3d is becoming a popular buzzword in Hollywood and the Tech Industry. People are starting to understand what we do, but I'm not sure what would be the best label to describe us. Keep in mind also that an industry is usually labeled after the final product and not necessarily the people that produce the product. 3D Rendering Industry sounds pretty dull, so I agree we need something a lot more sexy. What word best describes a beautiful image of something we dream to build? Thanks for getting the topic back on track. Although names like digital ninja and CAD assassin, etc... are fun to throw around, I doubt anyone will take them seriously. I started the thread with a serious desire to find a better name for our work. Maybe the desire is a pipedream though. Maybe we just have to wait for society to come up with a description for us. Or, maybe we will just always be plagued with the mysterious nature of our business and no name will suffice to identify us. I was a Civil Engineer for 15 years and I still get people asking me "What exactly do civil engineers do?". So, the reality is, we are not the only industry with a lack of societal identification. 3DMK
How bout 3D scientist??? Now that sounds important!! [Or a complete Wa#k] lol Most of the programs we use require a high level of scientific understanding. What about Light physician or Photon manipulator Science titles sound way cool...sort of like super hero stuff ... but for real!! Anyway as long as people start paying us more money I don't care if they call me a fool!

Frosty
A number of folks around my office remember Ernest's dad and his books from the 60's. I wish we had some.

Cool article. Thanks for sharing. That is exactly what we do, just now with a computer. Delineator is definitely shorter than 3D Architectural Visualization, but your right, still vague. I refer to Mr. Burden's Design Presentation book every once in a while... its a great resource for anyone who doesn't have it. the only people in the office who recognized "Delineator" were the 60+ crowd and a few in their 50's... fortunately though, since I often find this the hardest crowd to connect with... they now know what I do. -MerlyN-
Thanks to the wiki article I know now what that is. I still have no idea though how to pronounce it correctly without having to unknot my tongue afterwards... I'll stick with architectural illustrator for now, as Ralf's Product illustrator looses a lot of its appeal when translated to german and is as long as this, too... maybe I'll just stay the 3d geek guy or nerd for my friends...
