c-boogie
Hi - long time reader, first time poster here. I wish I had something more exciting to ask as a first post but I'm at my wits end with somewhat of an IT issue. We have 4 XP64 workstations, a small render farm on Server2003 64bit, and a server set up as the manager (server 2003 std). Last week we added Max2011 into the mix on all the workstations, render boxes, as well as the manager. At the same time, I upgraded my workstation to Win764bit (we had some downtime). After some fighting with backburner to get it up and running with Max2011, all the workstations and renderboxes were humming away . . . except my Win7 machine. It shows up in backburner, but never picks up a job. If any other workstation submits a job to the manager, my machine name doesn't show up in the list of available server. If I right-click on my PC's name in the monitor, it doesn't list any plugin versions. If I right-click on any job in backburner and select "edit settings" I get an extremely crippled display with only about 20 settings listed (normally the list is about 3x this length). All of the other workstations are working well - submitting job, picking up frames, rendering, etc. I can submit jobs from my Win7 machine (and backburner recognizes my computer) but it just doesn't pick up a frame. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all of my max versions but keep getting the same results. Is there some sort of issue with Win7 that I might have overlooked? Searching the web there are obviously loads of little quirks, but I can't seem to find one that sounds like this. Any thoughts? Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Matt McDonald
The first thing which comes to mind is the Windows 7 firewall. Its a bit more aggressive than the one in xp. Have you tried disabling it? Are you running backburner server as a service? And if so, I are you running it under a different user name? If you are, then you need to log in to the Win7 box using that user name. Start the backburner application. Allow it to connect. Shut it down and reinstall the service. On Win7 there are user files associated with backburner, if you run the service as a user who has never run the application, those files are not created. Tommy L
It looks like a permissions issue. Have you tried running Backburner server "run as administrsator" on your machine?

Casey Hawley
Permissions is the problem. Find the "network" folder in all 3ds Max and Backburner related folders and make sure to set Full Control for users or groups as necessary. My network setup is only me, so I just set "everyone" to full control as sometimes setting only specific users still doesn't accomplish the correct result. Good luck! Casey Hawley
Which folder is this "network" folder? Where do we find it or assign it? Thanks Well, after looking again at my configuration, none of my "network" folders have permissions set for 'everyone'. I think I solved the problem by having the same user name and password set on both my server and workstation. I know permissions was the problem at one point! However, to answer your question.. There's one in your main 3dsmax folder. Then there is one in the Backburner folder. There is another "network" folder in your Users//AppData/Local/Autodesk... just keep digging down until you find it. I may have used the 'everyone' fix just to see if I could get things working, then went back and set up specific user, or authenticated user. Sorry I can't be more specific.. this was the only time I've ever tried to set this up and I don't remember all the details. Hope this helps! mikes8500
I had exactly the same problem. If you are running on x64 Windows 7, you will need to stoke up BB Server first manually, watch for a successful connection to the manager then quit. BB creates a folder named "Backburner" in "c:\users\yourprofilename\AppData" What you have to do then is go to the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\Backburner" and create a subfolder named "Network" and copy all the files in "c:\users\yourprofilename\AppData\Backburner" to this subfolder. Register the service and start it and you should be good to go. If you've had previous installations of max, the Network folder might be there, just overwrite the files there with the ones from your profile. Aparently BB isn't x64 ready yet. Let me know if it works Mike

Strange thing is that I remember disabling both windows firewall and ESET Internet Security but I think in the meantime probably I must have disabled network thinking that I need to make to keep my pc secure. And BB was not working so I thought problem was related with something else. One friend discovered that all is fine when ESET is disabled (I was running ESET in automatic mode). So I switch to learning mode (manual) and when BB started, ESET asked permissions and I permit and problem was solved. Apparently ESET was blocking BB.
