Professor Posted June 23, 2010 Share Posted June 23, 2010 I am trying to set up an exterior scene with sunrays shining through an object (like a fence). I am using mr sun and sky. I tried using Parti Volume Shader, but could not get it to work for an exterior scene. Basically, the volume light shows up everywhere, not just where I want it. Is it possible to use Parti Volume for an exterior scene, or is there another method that would work better? Any input on how to go about this would be appreciated. Thanks! Professor Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share Posted June 23, 2010 Data - Sorry, Yes - I am trying to do this is 3dsmax 2010. Your solution, while workable, is not what I am really looking for. I am using a Daylight system, so do not want to use standard or photometric lights if possible. The Daylight system is casting the shadow and making a light footprint on the ground, but I want to add rays of light from the object to the light footprint. Although a spotlight setup would do the job, I don't think it is the ideal way to go when using a Daylight system. For one, the multiplier for the spotlight would have to be really high to overcome the Daylight system and then trying to match the light footprint from the Daylight system with the spotlight would be challenging. Also, I eventually want to animate this scene by changing the time of day through the Daylight system, not wanting to move another light to keep sync. Thanks for your input though! datacrasher Posted June 23, 2010 Share Posted June 23, 2010 The problem I found with the daylight system is that sometime it interferes with other lights when you create them the DS only used for when you are creating an scene you can animate it going from morning, evening and night. So I think you would need to exclude the fence from the DS. Instead of the lights to light up the footprints you can assign a material and increase the self-illumination to about 50% and charge the color to yellow IMO. I would get everything set up in your scene before you start to animate it b/c when you have the animation key set and then you mite want to change something in your scene that mean you would have to delete the animation key move the model/object and then re-apply the keys…..
