Mental ray materials

Only site i found was http://www.mrmaterials.com/ but it has only so small choice of materials.
Looks like there's a little over 500 materials available now. I wouldn't exactly classify that as "a small choice" but it certainly is smaller than some of the other material exchange sites for various render engines like VRay and Maxwell.

Keep in mind material contribution sites rely on the community to make them grow. We (mrmaterials) have a relatively small number of users that have contributed those 500+ materials. If more people would contribute, then obviously the site would grow & the whole community would benefit from that. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) it's painfully obvious to me now that the mental ray community simply isn't interested in helping each other with such a task. :/

Hi Jeff,

unfortunately it seems that most mainstream studios are working on Vray and hence mental ray is simply losing out in quantity of people out there .. i've used your website and have been very grateful for the learnings from the materials on there ..

i'd be curious to know what percentage worldwide is vray users vs mental ray ..

The other factor is that it is relativly easy to create most materials with the A&D shader. There are of cause those specific ones that take a little more thought and experimentation to create.

My biggest gripe with downloaded materials is more offten than not they are not optimized and can cause more problems and head ackes trying to trouble shoot than its worth. Especially with simple materials.

As for the level of community support, yes it is lacking. Here, Vizdepot, CGAllusions and Jeff's forums are the only ones that you really get answers and help. (Jeff big thumbs up fo your forum)

to OP,

you really should learn how to make your own basic mats. Because then you can make adjustments + control settings like glossiness + rendertimes + interpolatiosn. If you're doing arch viz, you'll probably need a template of about 20-30 anyhow. Anything else, you probably won't need.
