RAID advice

Recommended Posts

ok, so my new server just arrived (hurrah!)

Its got 2 x 2Tb drives in RAID(mirror). Ive never had RAID before. Im assuming I can just use the drive as per normal...I just stick stuff on there and it is written to both drives?

Im going to use it as backup as well as a server. Ill keep my current projects local, then backup my local project folders daily to the server. Does this sound like a safe and efficient way to work?

I have 8 nodes, two workstations and this server.

Actually I'd advise not to wait that long. I have lost a harddrive with ten years worth of personal stuff last year. So I know perfectly well, what that means. I wish I've had been a tad more careful about keeping backups, especially when I noticed, that half by backup dvd's (which I kept due to the lack of backup drives and raids) had deteriorated over time past readability.

I'd invest an afternoon getting up to speed for worst case scenarios just so you know, what to do, when one drive fails and you dont acidentally format or shorcut the second drive. Just my two cents...

You might also want to buy a third Terra-byte drive, and a USB drive connector. Once a month or so, hook that 3rd drive up, and duplicate the disk onto there also. I think I currently only have most of my data on a mirrored RAID, but have been meaning to buy a third Terra-byte drive for the same purpose.

The saying goes if the data does not exist in 3 places, it does not exist at all. I haven't lost info since, but I also mysteriously stopped corrupting hard drives around the same time.

...but anyway, I switched to RAID several years ago after learning the hard way a couple of times about backing up data.

1 - Numba one double plus most important - Keep that puppy cool. Heat kills drives.

2 - Keep a spare drive on hand and make sure your server is set up to alert you (email usually) when a drive dies. And it will. Then you can swap it out and rebuild the array immediately.
