Nic H
just bought a handful of these and wanted to share how good they are. 7k spherical, good reflections and high dynamic range. using these with just a dome light / LWF /phys cam and fiddling with the gamma a tiny bit (lower to .8 or so = more contrast) in the VrayHDR loader gives great results and sharp shadows and lovely colour. the best HDR's i have used - makes the other stuff in our library a bit redundant. if you are looking for a new lighting solution other than vray/sun/sky give these a try. neko
i bought some last week, and am hoping for some great results, but i still have a lot to learn about HDRI's (and mental ray). will probably be digging up some old threads and/or asking a few questions myself. Dave Buchhofer
Definitely the most used/useful daylight hdrs in our lib also. The bob groothius sets are good also for more dusky setups
mattclinch
ah i've been meaning to get these for a while now. 7k spherical isn't particlarly huge - the hdri-locations ones are by far my favourite with 11500x5750, and they just seem to work in mr with very little tweaking, but i'll definitely give these a go. is there a bundle anywhere, or do you have to buy them singley from 3docean? peterguthrie
Thanks for the plug Nic! Feel free to ask questions here, I'll do my best to answer them. Re: resolution, I find that most of the time the resolution is sufficient even for leaving the visible portion of sky as it is (without replacing it in pshop). I used a 1dsmk3 with a sigma 8mm to shoot the skies, as my priority was dynamic range and not resolution. If you are lucky enough to shoot on a day with no wind whatsoever then you might be able to shoot multiple views and stitch them together in order to get a higher res file. As it was even with the sigma 8mm I was capturing 7 shots in just over a second (5 fps on 1dsmk3) and some sequences were unusable due to moving clouds. Re: bundles, as soon as 3DOcean allow it (if they ever do), i'll offer bundles.
Nic H
been using them as an all in one lighting/reflection solution with dome light - working very well in conjunction with LWF, res is not much of an issue when only doing 1080 or 720 will post some results when done
kippu
is there any free/ watermarked version out there just to see the usage of it in my scenes?
peterguthrie
is there any free/ watermarked version out there just to see the usage of it in my scenes? Not a bad idea, will think about it. 3docean have a free file of the month feature, which could work, although the full zips weigh in at about 180mb... peterguthrie
For anyone interested, my most used ones from recent projects are: Frame House - 1725 Square House - 1725 Line House - 1928 Farnsworth House - 1725 Richmond Road - 0743, 1725, 2118 Chelsea Sq Dusk - 2003 Chelsea Sq Day - 1725 Allandale House - 1008 Sail House - 1847 The real beauty of using HDRs though is that you can completely change the lighting and mood of a scene simply by swapping HDR, here are some examples from my Allandale project along with the HDR sky used: HDR Sky used: 2118 HDR Sky used: 1224 HDR Sky used: 1224 HDR Sky used: 1008
Dave Buckley
so the only difference between those is simply the swapping of the hdri and exposure to compensate? nothing else has been changed?
peterguthrie
so the only difference between those is simply the swapping of the hdri and exposure to compensate? nothing else has been changed? I think the 1224 ones had a vray sun as well, other than that yes.

Dave Buckley
peter, all of those images with different hdri's look really good, why did you choose to go with the one with the white sky? any technical reasons or because you thought it looked nice? neko
this might be a question for jeff, as much as peter, but why don't you sell your HDRI's here in the CGarchitect shop ?
GordonHo
thanks for the ressource, a question on the licensing though: if i understand it correct, the standard license of ocean allows one single use of each purchase. meaning i am allowed to use a bought hrdi for only one project? cheers, gordon
wasteland giant
Just a bump. Peter's updated the shop/envato sale catalogue to include bundles. I'm probably picking up something today.
