rendering & editing for display on a 3D-capable flatscreen?

Hi!

One of my clients called me today and asked if it is possible to prepare some old projects for the display on a 3d-capable flatscreen.

I don't know yet which display-model he exactly got but i already know it's a brandnew samsung and you need shutter glasses in order to view in 3D.

I'm expecting futher information on which model he got tomorrow.

His idea is to prepare a short movie loop for an exposition in october.

I already told him that it is most likely that we need to re-render all content to get the additional pictures for the "second eye".

However, i got no idea yet how all this stuff works, maybe one of you has already experience with 3d-displays.

I got MaxDesign 2011 and I'm rendering with MR.

My crucial questions are:

1. Is there a script or something like that enables me to render stereoscopic content?

2. Do I have to render in HD to fit the native solution of the flatscreen and achieve the best quality? Will a lower resolution look crappy as the TV needs to "recalculate" the movie to its native resolution?

3. Which video editing software do I need for editing and exporting?

It would be very kind if anybody who has already experience with this stuff could help me out...

Thx in advance,

Lutz

Spatial View do a stereoscopic plugin for max. You want something like SVI player for viewing and z.lice for editing. But with the spatial view system if your careful you can edit both channels in your normal editing suite and use the SVI player to combine the channels for playing

Thanks for your reply Jon!

OK, to my understanding i got alternating frames in a videostream, one for the left and one for the right eye that are alternately masked by the shutter glasses, while the shutter glasses are sycronized to the framerate by the 3D-display right?

As a first step I should figure out which display they exactly got....

The svi-stereo-renderer seems to be like a "script" or a video post effect that combines all required settings in one interface, settings for depth and so on.

Using this plugin I could render out two sequences of stills, edit edit them in premiere or whatever and combine them in the svi player?

Is the svi-player capable of exporting the combined streams to mp4?

Thanks for your help!

Regards, Lutz

spot on. 60mhz go to each eye synched by the infra red emitter. I will double check the setting in the stereoscopic player and post tomorrow from work.

I work primarily in realtime, interactive displays but very interested to see your finished work. If you have any problems with fusion distance etc let me know and I will pass on what we have learned.

OK, thanks Jon!

I even found a free script for stereoscopic rendering that may be worth a try:

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/3dhippie-stereocam

I don't know if it works with 2011 as it is written for 2010 but i'll check this.

As a subscrition customer I could even do a parallel install of 2010&2011 as far as I know...

Anyway, i'll find a way to get this running.

I contacted Visumotion yesterday, z.l.i.c.e.3D is a bit too expensive for me as they charge 1.700,-€ for a licence. Maybe I'll find a workflow on how to edit the streams seperately so that I could skip this expense. Their stereoscopic rendering plugin doesn't run under 2011 either.

I think as soon as I have finished my current projects, I'll grab my machine, move to my client's office for a couple of days and do some testing.

Thankyou for help, regards,

Lutz
