Render with alpha-layers, how?

I want to render my max-scene in different alpha-layers. i e the shadows in one layer and the different models in other layers.

 

I have heard of the term "render in passes"....

go to render scene- render elements.. there u can add what ever channel u need, n save the out put path.....THATS IT,, hit render it ll render the image with the channels u given .....
