jophus14
Attached are two pics of rock faces made of limestone and I would appreciate some suggestions on how to create similar rock structures. I could use a VrayDisplacement but since the pattern is so irregular I'm not sure how that would work. I think poly-modelling this would be brutal since the rock will be pretty long in length (almost 300 feet) and will be seen from a slight aerial view. I was checking out some tutorials but since these are layered rocks those tutorials wouldn't help. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you all. JonRashid
I am not sure if you have access to mudbox. If you have you can create a high res version and use a bump map of the bricks as a brush. Once done you can generate normal maps etc from this and re-apply to your low res version. this will allow you to create an organic feel to your cliffs. jophus14
I don't have Mudbox but it sure does look cool. I found a pretty good texture on CGtextures and I created a reflection and displacement map out of it. I placed those maps on the geometry added modifiers and then copied that geometry a few times and adjusted the shape so each layer is different. It looks okay but I am still interested in hearing other suggestions. Thanks.
pipjor
looks like Starved Rock in IL??
jophus14
I was looking at Starved Rock here in Illinois for references but this is actually from Wisconsin Dells along the Wisconsin river. I think Starved Rock is sandstone and this is limestone. I might be wrong about that though.
