alrawli
Hi We are currently speccing out a couple of new workstations and i was wondering if anybody had any experience with the Quadro FX 3800 and 4800 Pro 3D and whether the 4800 was worth the extra money. We tend to work with very high poly ( typically upward of 10 mil polys although this is likely to increase to as much as the card can handle ) scenes from Zbrush models and Laser scan data in 3D Studio Max. Does the 4800 handle significantly more polys in the viewport?
ihabkal
that's the 1000 dollar question. As long as I can remember the question of if more expensive cards are worth it, hopefully someone can clear this up.
alrawli
Im sure for other things the increased cost is probably worth it , but im only really concerned with poly count in this instance. Ive been lucky enough to test both cards, found a machine in another dept with a 4800 card and both seem to be able to handle huge poly counts in Max the test we did was with 47 million polys which will do :-) for us. AJLynn
Also consider the new (in the last few months) ATI FirePro cards. The FX 3800 and 4800 are based on 2 year old tech and nVidia hasn't updated that line recently, but the ATI cards are their newest GPUs.
