Max Design 2011 - turning all the new stuff off.

right. after much pain shifting everything (scripts/ui/buttons, quads etc) across to Max 2011 from 2010 i've realised i still dont like any of the new stuff.

slate material editor has gone.

looks like im going to have to live with the new map browser..

"scene explorer" is straight back to the old style as its still painfully slow.

only a couple of things that are still reaaaally bugging me.

1. is those stupid transparent floating input boxes when you extrude or bevel etc. what was wrong with the old ones? why when i type a value into the box (the reason i would use it in the first place) does it not update the preview until i click the value up or down (changing it - great!) or counter-intuitively hit 'enter' (which used to act as a confirmation)...

who knows a way to turn them off?

2. i've overwritten every single .mat file i can find in both the install directory and the appdata directory with my default 24 blank arch+design .mat. when i boot up a new scene they are all blank - lovely. so why when i hit "reset material editor slots" does it still fill it with those bloody ridiculous premade arch+design samples. arrrrggggggghhh!!!!

if you just wanna switch all the new stuff off then surely you should have just stayed on 2010

but . . . slate is good, i love it but it did take me a while to start using it all the time.

also object paint is pretty good too.

there are a few annoying little things but i'm dealing with them for now, oh and there is a hotfix if you've not already got it

I agree.

One thing that bothers me is slate. it is too much for architecture. I also can't get materials from selected anymore except with the eyedropper...

I don't mind the new spinners though...

All in all it is better than 2010 in general...

the standard material library is C:\Users\Nils\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign\2011 - 64bit\enu\defaults\DesignVIZ.mentalray\Medit.mat...

Guess thats the single one, you didnt overwrite? ;)

If you rightclick on scene materials you can then filter by selected. No need to start yet another thread wondering what the resposible programmer thought when inventing this crap.

no, that was the first .mat file i have overwritten. makes it load up a new file with them, but still adds them when you "reset material editor slots"

was already aware of the filter by selected.

just because i can't stand the changes they make to the UI doesn't mean i don't want all the useful things - windows 7 support, the latest version of mental ray, object painter, new open exr plugin, etc etc.

Those would be"Caddies." It looks like there is no current way to turn them off, however, you can keep the box from jumping around the screen.
