help choosing monitor

Recommended Posts

i'm finally able to upgrade my monitor and have narrowed it down to either the NEC 2490WUXi or the HP ZR24W.

both are standard sRGB monitors rather than wide gamut and both are IPS screens. i have read that the HP is an excellent monitor despite being considerably cheaper than the NEC. the missing features are things like superior LUT etc (which i neither understand nor think i need).

i just want a monitor with 1920 x 1200 resolution, good viewing angles, a clear picture and of course, good colour.

is the HP a good choice or is the 'pro' NEC a better option? and are OLEDs any closer to being mass marketed?

edit: and does anyone know any stores in Surrey that stock both of these so i can go and compare?

I think the HP would be good for you. The gamut on these IPS displays isn't going to be a problem for most vis users, and they calibrate well. OLED isn't there yet and the ones I've seen aren't large and the color is not as good as an IPS. (E.g., compare the iPhone 4 screen to the HTC Evo - the Evo isn't even close.)

I've had an HP ZR24W for a couple of months now and I can't recommend it enough, especially for the price. When one of my Samsung XL20s packed up after only 2 years, I tried going cheap with an NEC EA241WM, which had a TN panel, but it was terrible and gave me headaches for the few days that I used it. I was recommended the HP 2475W by a friend and was gutted when I couldn't get hold of one as they'd been discontinued and replaced by the much cheaper ZR24W. No regrets now though, the ZR24W was a great buy - it needs calibrating out of the box (something I have yet to do), but other than that it's spot on.

thanks Guys,

i'm ordering the ZR24W. my current monitor is a 19" 4:3 model so i can't wait to upgrade.

Tom, the rest of my budget is going on a new system so i'd rather spend a bit more on CPU and GPU right now. actually i've more questions on hardware and DIY PCs so i'd better start a new thread...
