simon
I know this is a little off subject but I know many of you would of dealt with this same problem. I am looking for a new job and want to post my portfolio on the net. It will be designed in flash and around 15mb. I have never posted a web page and would appreciate any advice on cheap hosting companies in the UK. Obviously I don’t expect the site to be accessed all the time but I would need a good speed for all the images. Really any advice is appreciated, I am really in the dark on this one. simonP.S am very broke after working in athens for 6 months. :angesigh:

jackb602
Simon, Start with webhostingratings.com. They have reviews of many web hosting companies around the world. I chose ICDsoft.com because they got consistently great reviews, and they charge $60/year for 333MB. Hope this helps, Jack
simon
thanks for the help, i think i'll go with ICDsoft.com too jack. Netfirm was very tempting though but i need e-mail too. i must say i'm amazed at the diffence in price around. Will it matter though if i get a US based host when i'm in the UK?? simon
jackb602
Simon, Glad the links were helpful. Actually, ICDsoft is based in Honk Kong I believe, and that's where the servers are. I haven't set up my site yet, so I can't really talk about performance. But the issue has come up on webhostingratings.com and most people seem happy with it. Hazdaz
What a timely topic.. I was in need of a host myself.I tried webhostingratings.com, but that sites not coming up - no idea why though. That ICDSoft company is quite tempting.
Josh1587140445
I use and am very happy with infinology.com. And they have a ridiculous deal. $6.95 a month for 9,000Mb of space, and 5,000 e-mail accounts, and an ungodly amount of bandwidth. But I am not sure if that deal is offered thru their website itself. I have been using the link on my website to give my clients this deal when they need hosting service. Hazdaz
Good God.. 9GBs for $6.95! :gebigeek: Hey, I am curious if any of you guys can explain to me IF there would be an advantage if I hosted my own site? Like this is what I was thinking:I currently have a regular dial-up connection - but would like to get either DSL or Cable. Now are there any advantages (or if it is even possible) to get a DSL or Cable internet account that allows me to host a site on my own (I assume that I would have to have a static IP)? Would that be a more inexpensive way? OR would getting a company to host my site for about $8/mo and then getting a seperate high-speed access for my own system be the better way to go. I would guess, that this would be the more headache-free way (interms of security and keeping the system always up, etc). I think the convenience of having the site local would be nice, and I ASSUME that this would be a cheaper way to go, but honestly its quite a guess since I have never been 'into' this before. Anyone care to comment?

Would that be a more inexpensive way? Here is why not: Speed - the ADSL/Cable upload speed just ain't enough. Its hell to set up a real url to work (http://www.yourdomain.com?)Yes, you'll need static IP, which costs more, or just make sure you don't have any lond downtimes, so you IP is safe (but not forever)People are actually getting into your machine - takes a serious security measuresYou'd probably end up wanting another machine to host the site... But, you might find a Cable ISP that also gives a 5MB site host within the price you already pay.

Richard McCarthy
Not necessarily. You can get this great shareware called "dynsite" http://noeld.com/dldynsite.htm It will basically let you host your website on your desktop. It's a simple IP to DNS updater, so, you DNS is perminently locked to your IP. (so, you can basically host your site on a modem even!) This would work great for personal site, but if you use it for commericial purposes, I suspect most ISP would not be happy and would charge extra to host your commercial site on a Home DSL/Cable/56k Modem connection. Richard McCarthy
Well, an ADSL/Cable connection for hosting a personal portfolio site... just a couple of pictures and your PDF resume should be quite enough in my opinion.
