will1113
Hi Everyone i got a few basic questions if somebody could help me please?? Above is an image of a wall created by a splines. when i add an edit poly modifier i get unwaned lines apearing? can anybody explain why and how to get rid of them, so i got a nice clean extruded polygon. You can see where these unwanted lines are connecting to is a yellow coloured vertex. Why are they yellow vertexs?(they are not the starting points of the where i created the spline) and why have these extra lines connecting to them? and no others vertex do? Also when i extrude the back polygone is missing. why is this and how do i put it back in? Thank you very much for your help in advance and sorry if i am asking basic questions? Many thanks
hughie
Sorry res on my screen is low, so I cannot see the yellow lines, but by the sounds of it you want to use a Extrude modifyer on the spline not a Edit Poly.
mu_688687
On your edit spline first put extrude to give it face and then put edit poly to edit it coz if you will put direct edit poly without extrude then edit poly will automatically connect the edges to create face. Sorry guys! tried that again. on a simple rectangle box one inside the another, applied the extrude modifier (fine no unwanted lines), then applied the edit poly and i get a single unwanted line joining from the top left of the inside box to the top left of the outside box. can anybody help please????? thanks you! mu_688687
send me the screen shot of your model do remember to attach both the rectangles.
will1113
Thank you would be great if you could help! 1. I 'un ticked start new shape' 2. Drew 2 rectangles one inside another so they were both part of one spline. 3. added a extrude modifier (all seems fine) 4. added an edit poly modifier ( unwanted line apears) I am using 3ds max2009, what am i doing wrong??? thanks!! mu_688687
In Edit poly you will get this line but it doesn't make any difference coz it will not create problem in selecting polygon it is a single polygon the edge is not separating it in any ways or you can try edit mesh there you will not find any line. will1113
Thanks for the reply. That line causes problems when i go to chamfer the edges, see screen shots??? Thanks for your patience! I tried to chamfer all the internal edges of one face. mu_688687
then try using edit mesh or remove the extra edge, select it and press back space.
will1113
Thanks for you help!! I didnt realise there was a chamfer feature under edit mesh. so that seems to do the trick perfectly. Really appreciate your time.
-MerlyN-
When extruding the spline to a polygon, max needs to close the polygon, thats where that extra edge is coming from. A polygon always needs to have a single, continued edge around it. If you have cuts in it like in the windows, the edge around the window opening needs to be connected to the outer edge, hence you get an edge somewhere. I usually use the cut tool in the edit poly modifier to cut edges in in somewhat more convinient places. Once you have done that you can select the stray edge and remove it by hitting Backspace. Once removed the chamfer edges will work again as desired.
will1113
Merlyn - Thank you for your response. I understand the reasoning behind those extra lines appearing now. and using the cut tool prevents makes the chamfer work correctly. cheers. notamondayfan
You should read up on sub division modelling, as you wont encounter half as many problems as spline modelling. Plus when you become more advanced and start to use advanced techniques, you will be glad you learnt how to model properly Deano
