CPU dropping out during Photon Emission Calc

Anyone have any knowledge about the CPU dropping out to '0' usage

during the Photon Emission calculations?.

It will start the process and run at 100% CPU usage but at around the 60% complete

mark the CPU drops to '0' and the MEM Usage remains at the same value with no change.

I can let it run for forever with no crash and no change. Last night I let it run when I left the office and when I got in this morning it was still at the same point with no change.

I'm using a Quad Core Xeon with 16GB RAM.

Go to "Rendering->Render Message Window..." and then generate photons again. My guess is that it stops generating photons after a certain amount of photons has been reached. You should see any error in the render message window.

I normaly have both the MR message window and the performance monitor open all the time when rendering.

The photon target had not been reached before the cpu drops out. I tried the same file 3 times, each with a different % result.

In the MR window it just stops and hangs at the same point- "JOB 0.5 progr: 63.6% photon emission on ghost.5"

Even the log files make no sense of what's going on and the IT manager can't figure it out either.

I got the job done in the end, but would still like to figure this out as it's not the first time I've seen this.
