Creating a steel grid material / [3ds 2010, mentalray]

Hello CG people!

 

Im busy creating an architectural visualisation containing metal grids. I thought it is a good idea to create the grid in a material to avoid an overcomplex model.

(image of what kind of grid im talking about, in the visualisation i'll see the grids on approx 5 - 10m camera distance.)

 

I created a standard grey material and added an 'tiles' opacity map. This works, however it does not contain the depth which is needed to determine the transparancy of the grid while viewing it from an angle. I tried working with displacement maps, i cant really make it work. Can anyone please help me?
