mcfetrmatt
Hi there, it seems to be a consensus that Zaha Hadid models in Rhino... Does anyone know how to model like this? These amoeboid shapes that could go on forever, attaching to other shapes to create the smooth fantastic organic forms? http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/hadidmiami.html And like this but with more than one 'column' coming from the center and that could then form the ground so that it looks seamless. ihabkal
you can easily do that with subdivision surfaces in max. I bet it is even faster to do approximatly in max than in Rhino where oyu have to draw accurate curves.
mcfetrmatt
Great thanks! Few more things sorry, do you (anyone) know how to combine the ends off all these 'arms' to another part of its self? So that it all looks seamless? (refer to image). Also any tips for getting a bitmap material to not stretch the way it does? I used a uvw map modifier but that didn't work... Thanks again Edited August 15, 2010 by mcfetrmatt
Gus_Rayvus
You need to unwrap it. search "unwrap uvw" in max help or google.
Frosty
You are correct that Hadid's studio uses Rhino a lot - among other software. However, its used more fore its iterative design capabilities than anything else. Much of the form is generated through Grasshopper scripting. Change a few variables in the script and out pops a new design. I think this can be quite interesting if the inputs and formulas relate to architectural program and site conditions. There was recently a paper written by one of her staff and a subsequently a gnarly discussion over on Archinect about the impact of (or lack of) scripted design tools on design aesthetics. Have a read and decide for yourself.
mcfetrmatt
Thanks Frosty, where can i get a copy of that paper? Do you know the name of the person who wrote it? Also thanks to Gus_Rayvus for the unwrap uvw tip, it worked really well! Does anyone know if it's possible to model these things in rhino with grasshopper then? Or using 3ds max to join the ends of the 'protrusions' up so that it can joint up seamlessly? Thanks
Frosty
Here is the article >> http://www.archpaper.com/e-board_rev.asp?News_ID=4623 I couldn't find the thread on Archinect though, you'll have to find that yourself.

mcfetrmatt
Just thought I'd do a quick update. What I was looking for was in the "T-Splines" plugin for Rhino, that allowed me to stitch different things together into one mesh. Now I just need to learn how to use grasshopper effectively
