Derek Forreal
ok, so i've bought my components and i've started putting everything together. now i'm starting to look into overclocking and have seen that an OC'ed 980x can require around 400W. so if i'm rendering (i.e. CPU full load) and maybe doing some modelling in the background, is an 850W supply enough? i've also read that the Sapphire 2GB HD5850 needs about 300W under load - that's 700W already... here is the list of components i ended up with: PSU - OCZ GameXStream 850W MB - Asus P6X58D-E CPU - i7 980x Cooler - Noctua NH-U12P-SE2 RAM - 12GB OCZ Platinum Case - Silverstone FT-02B (lots of fans - how much power do fans require) GPU - Sapphire Toxic 2GB HD5850 (is more than enough for now) HD - WD RE3 1TB Optical - Sony DVD Drive I haven't actually switched on the PSU yet so will send it back for an exchange if necessary. OT - Jeff, there's a typo on the Forum main page. it should read Forum -> Main Forums -> Technical Discussions
AJLynn
A 5850 has a TDP max of 151W and if you made a 980X use 400W you'd fry it, as its TDP is 130W. An 850W PSU will be sufficient.
Derek Forreal
i think i read the test wrong then . so here the test shows 400W but that must mean total consumption for the whole test period? i feel better now... edit: now i've read the article in full, it's clear that the quoted power consumption is for the whole system. AJLynn
400 is pretty reasonable for an OC system. Personally I'm looking to downsize my power needs...
