Christiansltd
Hi i have always been lead to belive that you should use nvida quadro spec graphics cards for autodesk applications for stability and performance but have recently heard lots of talk about geforce cards that are cuda enabled are exactly the same apart from drivers, i even heard from a trusted source that an nvidia rep said the gtx cards are exactly the same as the quadro cards and you would be stupid to spend the extra....... I dont mind spending the extra and the new Quadro Fx 4000 @ 2Gb seems a really good price for the workstations however if the cheaper non commercial spec cards really do work fine then there is to be a saving made and you could get a 4gb card for roughly the same price.. Very confused, any advice would be greatly appreciated
Jeff Mottle
This should help: http://www.cgarchitect.com/news/Reviews/Review076_1.asp If you get the newer GTX cards and the latest (as of several weeks ago) Quadro cards that all use the new Fermi chip architecture, however for CUDA related apps for rendering, the more memory and stream processors you have the faster and larger scenes you will be able to render. For strictly viewport performance, read the review above for more detailed information.
AJLynn
Do you use a CUDA or OpenCL app or are you just looking for something to power your viewports?
Christiansltd
I need it for viewport display, its for Vue 8.5, 3DS Max & Autocad Civil 3D, we do landscape and civil vis so data sets are quite big and the currentQuadro FX 4600 we have are struggling a bit. AJLynn
Well, a Quadro 4000 should certainly give you a boost.
Cesar R
Hey guys, I would like to build a machine to render using Octane or similar real time engines. I noticed the on the octane render site, some people express that their GeForce nvidia with a 1.5GB of ram work great with their engine. What is the main difference with the GeForce line versus the Quadro line. It seem both have comparable ram amounts and Geforce is certainly much more economic. AJLynn
Not much, for Octane, as far as I can tell so far. It would certainly appear that unless there are further changes to the software that differentiate the lines, Geforce 4-series cards are the current price/performance leaders for this. Cesar R
What is the difference between card lines Andrew, can you reffer me to some link maybe? I just went back to the nvidia site and noticed both lines go up pretty high on cores.

Christiansltd
Right think i am getting somewhere at last i have narrowed my options to: Quadro 4000 Ati firepro 7800 Or at a third the price a gtx 460 2 GB. I will be using this for large projects using acad civil 3d, 3ds max & vue 8.5, currently i mainly get issues when using Civil 3D in 3D viewport and when trying to pan around. What would be the advantage of getting a pro card over the gtx ? I look forward to your response as always, Cheers CJ
Christiansltd
Hi i have decided to try the Nvidia GTX 460 2GB (Palit) Seems a good card and just giving it a try in Civil 3D with some heavy data. Is there any specific or special drivers available that i should be downloading or just the basic ones from nvidia ? Thanks in advance
Christiansltd
Hi trying out the gtx 460 2GB i am coming up with a few issues. It seems fairly ok until you try to use the orbit tool, see the second picture, has anybody esle encountered this, what you can see is a 3d topo survey of quite a small site. Christiansltd
Hi, still not resolved the above issue, is this an inconpatability issue, does anybody have the same issue ?
AJLynn
Do you have the latest drivers from the web site? The 460 has a new core (GF104) and usually that means you get some driver bugs.
Cesar R
Is there a table on the nvidia site which point out which core is in each card?

Professor
Hi, still not resolved the above issue, is this an inconpatability issue, does anybody have the same issue ? Looks like it is turning objects into boxes due to the fps being to low. There is a setting where you can override this or adjust the graphic view for a particular fps. I know you just bought a screaming video card and shouldn't have this issue, but if that is what is happening, then just wanted to mention a possible work around. Christiansltd
Excellent, thanks for that i will give it a try.
Jock
I know max has a similar response if the scene is a bit too heavy, where it will turn all the objects into bounding boxes while you pan. I take it, it goes back to normal once youve finished panning?
