Vray Interior Lighting Problem

I am currently doing an interior day time image from a small project I am working on.

I am having problems getting the daylighting correct. I have a vray light plane in the main large window which when enabled emits enough light to light the roof effectively. I have tried a direct target light and a vray sun light to try and immerse the room with sunlight and neither are currently entering the room and creating the shadows I would expect them to do from previous scenes!

See attached examples of what I mean. It is most probably something simple and idiotic I have forgetten but my brain is strained trying to work it out... any suggestions?

The first image is with the vray plane off and a vray sunlight

The second image is with the vray plane on and a target direct light on. Light enters this one but not in a realistic way and more like a spotlight.

Thanks.
