Dave Buckley
Does anybody have any good film suggestions that aren't your typical 'mainstream big budget hollywood blockbuster' type films. Any suggestions are good. Don't have to be feature films. Documentary type films are also welcome amongst anything really. Keep it clean though
mattclinch
Donnie Darko The Fountain hollywood, but not your usual 'blockbusters' and both beautifully shot.
Justin Hunt
"Hard Candy" no it isn't a porno.
Dave Buckley
Not seen the Fountain, will get that on my list. Justin - Hard Candy was awesome - I saw it a while ago. Also, subtitles isn't a problem. So World Cinema options can be thrown in too.
Stephen Thomas
I watched 'The Secret in Their Eyes' last week at the cinema and it was one of the best films I have ever seen. Great story, acting and cinematography. Spanish with subs, it picked up the oscar for best foreign film.
Nic H
dont know if these are 'alternative' tbh but they are very good (ten million times better than the kind of crap like avatar that floods film theatres) A Prophet - french 'jail' film with eng subs excellent http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235166/ The lives of others - set in east berlin before the fall of the wall excellent x 2 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/

City of God - Brazilian Film, awesome story and characters Green Street Hooligans - I enjoy watching Lexi Alexander's films. Not a blockbuster director but has a lot of quality in her camera angles and lens.
mattclinch
few more i thought of today... Man Bites Dog - french film noir black comedy in faux documentary style following a serial killer. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103905/ Boogie Woogie - black comedy about the london art scene with some big names but small budget. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1134664/ The Fall - easily the most beautifully shot film i have ever seen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/ Basquiat - biopic on the rise of artist jean-michel basquiat. worth it for bowie's warhol alone. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115632/
jinsley
Equilibrium http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/ supposedly influenced a lot of how the Matrix was shot...
Stephen Thomas
A friend of mine recommended I check out the films of Swedish director Lukas Moodysson but I haven't had the chance yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lukas_Moodysson I did however watch another Swedish film this week called 'Let the Right One In' about a young boy who befriends a girl who turns out to be a vampire. I think they're in the process of doing a hollywood remake as we speak...

-MerlyN-
Have Dreams, Will Travel http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446802/ Very nice movie, IMO. Kinda hard to come by, though, as the production company went bankrupt before the movie was released. There's only a DVD release from somewhere in south america I think. Can be found on ebay, sometimes.
Dave Buckley
serbian film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1273235/ wow, perhaps not that alternative, not sure if it's something i could even watch.
Quique
I saw these through Netflix streaming and enjoyed them. Mary and Max. Stop-motion animation, a slow, mature story that kids would probably find boring. Very sentimental, too, surprised me. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0978762/ Angel-A (by director Besson) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473753/
