neil poppleton
i would be very interested if anybody has purchased a 3d book and thought it most inspiring / useful / read it twice it was that good !
mbr
I really like John Chismar's books for Max. He hasn't had one since v4, but they are by far the most useful books I've used. He goes through the theory of the motion graphics, the process, and a million useful tips that I've never heard of or seen anywhere else. For general stuff, look at 3D World and Computer Arts. They have great tutorials, tips, techniques, interviews, etc. They ain't cheap, but they are worth it.
jackb602
[digital] Lighting and Rendering by Jeremy Birn is a classic. It is not dedicated to a particular software package, but rather presents a full range of skills and techniques that you can apply to your work. I think this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the craft of visualisation. Here's a link to it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1562059548/qid=1088617945/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-2220544-8825526?v=glance&s=books Jack

Jim Mann
Essential CG lighting techniques by Darren Brooker is good and has max examples included. If you do try Dan Ablan's book Digital Cinematography and Rendering and want to read more on the subject then I can recommend you have a look at "Cinematography Theory and Practice" by Blain Brown. It isn't a 3D book but a great reference if you move into animations.
