Justin Hunt
Iray (wooHoo) and some interesting new procedural shaders http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/ken/3ds_max_2011_subscription_advantage_pack_revealed_iray_physx_substances Not too sure when it will be available so keep an eye out jhv
Justin Hunt
I wonder how many threads there will be about iray making it too easy and its a one button "make beautiful" solution. jhv
Crazy Homeless Guy
Justin, ...have you tested it? How many poly's can you through at it?
Justin Hunt
No, not tested it, just watched the videos where they claim that polycount isn't an issue. The scene they are showing has 3 million pollies with glossiesm soft shadows etc and ran fine. Although I suspect they were running a beast of a machine or two. One thing that I found a little strange was how they set the standard mentalray render up, by cranking up global parameters that obviously will result in a huge rendertime and crappy result. It may highlight how easy it is to use iray but is misleading by suggesting that you need to be a render guru to use mentalray. The substances look interesting too. A bit of a showcase for mentalmill. jhv
Justin Hunt
I suppose that will be a problem with most GPU renders, jhv
kenpimentel
More information on iray: http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/ken/more_details_on_mental_image_s_iray_in_3ds_max_and_the_cloud
Professor
I saw Iray demoed at Siggraph in LA this summer. Very impressive! The real-time rendering was sooo fast. I see it as a huge time-saving tool. Autodesk wouldn't give a definite when it is coming out, but hinted at very soon, so probably will see bundled with the next release of Max. I'm excited! jinsley
my IT guy is looking now... which means I could have it anytime from 1 hour to 1 week from now.
MegaPixel
Will using I-Ray mean that your Material and Lighting workflow must revolve around using Mental ray / Scanline or will it be renderer agnostic? Perhaps I should read a little more into this. As a V-Ray user, I'd hate to have to jump through hoops to get scenes converted over in order to use it with success. jinsley
... The workflow is much more akin to Fryrender/Maxwell! Regards Bri which isn't necessarily a bad thing when doing your lighting studies anyways... I still got nothing from the subscription site. jinsley
Looks good Shane... I am really liking it so far. I plan to use it to do scene set up and testing and then switch over to mental ray for the final renders at a much higher res. I am letting something run over night... should be interesting to see what I get tomorrow morn.
theqball
Thanks! The team is very excited to see the feedback and anticipation thus far. It might not be ideal for all workflows but I think users will find some very creative ways to use iray and iterate faster.
Spacelord
Heres a quick 30s test using the cabin scene from cgsociety
theqball
that's pretty good for 30s! one simple trick to try is rendering 2x the resolution and then processing the image in PS with a despeckle filter or something similar, and then reducing by 50% to the desired output size
Spacelord
Hi Shane, No need, render it for another 30s or so and its gone
jinsley
Looks nice Duncan! and very fast... I somehow don't think I have as nice a hardware set-up as you... rendering at 1250 px wide, decent results were taking 2 - 3 mins at a minimum (although I'm not complaining about the speed) can't wait to get back to work tomorrow (i know... its sad) and see some results...
