Tommy L
Im trying to imprint text onto a pill. Should be simple, but I just dont know how to do it.... Any ideas? Will be seen real close so I dont want to use displacement or bump. Boolean is not playing ball, Ive no idea why. Max 2010, help much appreciated. Tom. intero_ua
Hi Tom, if you want to do it with boolean, - just subdivide the pill with whichever tool you prefer, I'd just at a time of creating ChamferCyl give it more polygons so Bollean or ProBoolean will handle the task of cutting the text out better, or just apply Subdivide modifier to the pill to make it quicker if polygon count is not a problem. I would do it little different though, just to demonstrate it real quick I attached couple files. Tommy L
Thanks Alexander. In the pill fiule you created from the shape, Im assuming you attached the text and a circle to make a shape, then edit poly modifier. I tried this originally, but the text becomes a hole, how do you get around this? In fact, I cant figure out how you made the blue pill at all. Can you give me a short explanation? intero_ua
Yes, normally there would be a hole where text is, then you can use CAP tool of EditablePoly, and extrude it down, etc... Sorry, just saw your question about how blue pill was made at all, I'll explain later today, in few hours, ok? Tommy L
AHA! I get it. Thanks. Ive never used CAP in the modifier panel like that, I was using 'cap holes' modifier which made a shambles of everything.
Tommy L
Im still having problems. I get messed up mesh in the top face, making it very difficult to smooth. I'd appreciate the explanation you were going to give. Thanks, Tom.
Dave Buckley
another method. create chamfer cyl create text convert cyl to edit poly with cyl selected go to compound objects>shape merge pick shape>text convert cyl back to edit poly go to poly mode the poly's inside the 2 should be selected ctrl+shift+click the edge icon of the edit poly rollout ctrl+click remove this gives you a clean poly where the text is select that poly extrude down hope it helps i guess you could also remove the edges on the top of the cyl first before doing the shapemerge to give a cleaner top if required
Tommy L
Thanks Dave. I tried this method, but its chamfering all the edges I have a problem with. I managed to get a nice clean look with vray displacement.
intero_ua
Hi Tom, here is more info about how that blue pill was made, I recorded a quick video before dinner break, sorry, for some reason mouse cursor did not record and this is total improvisation, but this should be okay to follow, I uploaded video here: http://rapidshare.com/files/419496105/Video_2010-09-16_203013.wmv 33Mb Oh, and sorry for small break in the middle of the video, someone knocked on the door, I had to step away but did not want to stop the video. Tommy L
Wow, thanks Alex, you really put some work into that answer, much appreciated, if there's a favor I can do in return let me know. edit: Just watched the video, very good modeling technique. I have never used scale at vertex level to solve the over chamferred corners. That will help tremendously in the future, thanks again!
