internet explorer = bad news

That's a dumb suggestion on the govermnents part. So everyone switches to Mozilla or whatever, give it a few months and you'll find Mozilla would be exploited as well. I'm sure it has just as many vulnerabilities. In fact, probably more becuase there have not been attempts to exploit it.

i've use IE since it began. basically because it was the defaul browser, i was happy with it because i didnt know different, and i not like change usually :p

but both my home and work pc's contracted some irritating (but not dangerous) trojens recently my security systems couldn't sort out.

because of this i switched over to Firefox (advice from a m8) and dumped IE completely.

Best move i ever made. for the first time in years i feel like i have new pc's :) browsing is faster, NO popups, tabbed browsing, much tighter security....the list goes on.

since most spammers/viruses are targeted toward IE and other MS products (ie, outlook) i've completely dumped as much MS stuff as i can. and i feel much better for it :)

I just battled some trojans for about 30 hours straight!! Took my damn weekend. Thanks to some generous folks at Extremetech.com, I was able to get my PC working again.

It was so bad, IE would open, then open a few popups, then go to a full screen of green death with a "Click Enter to Continue" and attempted to download something that Norton caught (I NEVER hit enter).

I deleted all I could find with Spybot and Adaware and Norton in safe mode, but it still started all over again when I opened IE.

The cure was to delete the files in the wndows RUN folder in the registry and reinstall Norton.

Scary stuff. Just glad my workstation is offline. I think I'll be switching to Firefox soon.

Hey mbr, I'm dealing with what sounds like a very similar situation with my home pc, except I'm resorting to a complete re-format. Maybe I could do what you did but it's really time for a fresh start anyway.

I've heard a lot of good things about firefox and I just relayed this info to the IT guy here at work. He had read about this yesterday and then mentioned that he's been using firefox for a while now.

I am definetly switching!

Brian,

It's probably going around :-/ !

I almost did a reformat, and it would have been quicker, but this worked. I just did one a month ago, though, so I didn't really want to drag the old CDs out if I didn't have to.

Good luck. Not to scare you, but there was one that was really severe, that reformatting would not have helped. I can give you a link to the discussion about that, if you want, but I am guessing that's pretty rare (although who knows). Scary stuff.

Firefox here. I use the smoke theme - looks great, browses great, no popups, tabbed browsing, built-in minimal google search bar....love it. If you install Firefox be sure to first uninstall Mozilla if you have it.

Im also glad that I dont use IE more. Ah a few times I do, when i visit some pages I cant live without, and they are not designed for other then IE.

So now we just waiting for the webcoders to code some usefull code :p

I use mozilla and have done it for a while now. Its simply a nasty browser. So IE and opera is just for testing my work with.

I just read an article on need for alternative browsers on CNN's site, it doesn't mention FireFox, or if it did I missed it. But having this sort of article on a major news site can only help educate the masses that IE is not their only option.

I started using IE after YEARS of being dedicated to Netscape when it was bought by AOL. It was no longer an 'alternative' or a fighter for change. Besides, it wasn't working very well.

I want to check out FireFox, thanks to all of your posts.

During the last 20 hours I have not slept fixing a problem with a Trojan that couldn't be removed with any of the 3 antivirures programs I have used. The computer slowed down to the point that it was taking 15 minutes too boot up. Super slow down.

This is on my laptop, I ended up buying a new drive which I just finished installing and it is working OK now. However, I was wondering how soon before I get another trojan..... Thanks for the information. My virus detection system didn't work, that's Norton, I switched and the other one can detect but couldn't correct it. Any suggestions for a good antivirus software.

I do believe that Microsoft have not done their home work on security for many years. It is a shame that nobody has come out with a substitute for them. In my area they also own the cable company. Two streets down from me there is another ISP. My system goes down very often and it runs at 2-3 mbps down and 340 kbs up. The neighbors 2 street down never experience any problems and their system is running at 5 mbps down and 1.8 mbps up. The technicians at Charter tell me that their switching mechanism and server are too sensitive to viruses which are causing the problems. There is nothin I can do to prevent the monopoly except moving out of here. This is one of the worst internet cable company I have ever used.

I guess is the best example of what monopoly does to efficiency....

Thank

Elliot

Most likely because it's still in beta format. Nonetheless, it's the best browser i've used to date, Mozilla is a close second behind it. Both browser are coded by the same people (mozilla.org). BTW, netscape was always based a previous version of Mozilla - Mozilla was always the "geek" test-bed for Netscape public release. IE still sucks and it's a shame some websites still require it to function (online bank website, online merchants, etc..)

question:

If i switch to another web browser, lets say Firefox, opera or wahtever, could i see all the webpages without problems?

Maybe a dumb question, but im not sure how html coding works, but theres a lot of webpages that in the main page states something like "optimized for IE" or "optimazed for Netscape" etc....could i keep on seeing those pages?...i mean without errors or something?...flash pages, etc...

For the most part the majority of pages will work and look the same. You will find some pages do not render (display) properly or look the way they did in IE. While there are a set of universal standards that descibe the HTML and CSS languages, not all browsers completly respect them, which is why you will find some browsers act differently. This is the reason many web developers completlely refused to develop for Netscape. For whatever reason Netscape decided to re-invent HTML and make it look how they thought it should. (bad idea!)

As was already mentioned some sites (like banking and commerce sites) will not work at all unless IE is used. This does not mean they woudn't work, but due to the secure nature of those sites, the owners have opted to use code to prevents any browser but IE from working. This is most likely becuase all of the security testing was done and approved on IE. Allowing other non-tested browers to work on those sites could potentially open security holes.

yup, IE will show 99.999% of pages with no probs. in a months use of Firefox so far, for hours on end browsing each day, i've only come across 1 page that wouldnd display properly in all that time.

i downloaded firefox to try as my browser. so far so good. i also dowloaded thunderbird, which is mozillas email app, to try as my email app. hopefully all goes well.

edit...

i am a little disappointed that firfox does not have a built in spell checker for use with posting in forums and such. one was not available by extension either.

Any suggestions for a good antivirus software.

Elliot, You migth want to look into using apps like ZoneAlarm, Adaware and Pest Patrol. ZoneAlarm will block them from getting out and Adaware will find them. I also use PestPatrol (http://www.pestpatrol.com/), which has a suite of tools to scan active memory and cookies. Although Adaware is probably one of the best tools for this and they have a free version (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) I've found both apps find things the other did not.

Jeff,

Thank you very much for your suggestions. As of now I have been here around 50 hours of almost non-stop trying to fix my laptop for the next trip. I purchased one of those 7200 RPM Hitachis hardrives for laptops. It is just an incredible ordeal to install everything back into the laptop. Programs, plugins..... password.... fine tunning.... There has been a difinte improvement in the Laptop, now it is quick again....

I will duplicate the hardrive with one of those duplication utilities. I heard that Ghost is kind of difficult to use.... Is that true....

Thanks again for your suggestions I will try them...... I am going back to the Caribbean this comming week.... My laptop has to be up and running before the trip.

Thanks

Elliot

Its up to you. They can almost the same, and they are using the same enginen (gecko) so they render the pages the same way. And there is a lot of fansy plugins for both, if you are into that.

My vote will go to mozilla 1.7, and soon there will be a 1.8

i am confused by this also. so they are similar, and use the same engine. then why have 2? it seems like there has to be a reason. i understand that mozilla is a suite and firefox is a browser, but mozilla includes its own browser under its own name. from the screen shot the mozilla broswer looks like it still carries the netscape 6 graphics. i don't know, i am just curious as to what the true differences or reasons are.
