Strange selection problem... can't selet anything when lots of geometry in the scene

I'm having this strange problem and any help would be appreciated.

 

Basically, any time my scenes get to about 100 objects, I can't select any geometry with my arrow picker... I can select things through the object selection dialog and with ctrl-A ... but the geometry isn't even recognized by my arrow... usually it turns to that cross hare thing when over geometry.. but I'm getting nothing. I'll rectangle marquee select over geomtry and it flat out won't select it.

 

Any ideas? as you might imagine this is quite frustrating..

 

I've made sure I have 'all' under the selection roll out in the top tool bar.

 

I'm on windows xp 64 with 3ds max design 2011

Edit:

More strange behavior. I can select an object when I open a scene fresh... but once I make a selection of one object, and deselect... Then I cannot select anything else from then on out...

I kind of fixed the problem.... Uninstalled SP1 and it seems to be back to normal...
