tecton3d
my company (real estate developers) don't have a ton of data Carbonite. It seems simple enough, and very cheap, but I'd appreciate some input from anyone here that has either tried it, or has thoughts about it, or other similar products. Off the cuff, it seems the pitch "When your computer is idle, Carbonite automatically backs up new and changed files. You don’t have to do anything! When you’re using your computer, Carbonite goes to sleep so it will never slow down your computer or internet connection."...could be a bit of a stretch. I'd hate to think it would slow down a system. Thanks!
rmccoy
I'm using Mozy which is pretty similar. It's been really good so far. I have it backing up my workstation with no problems at all. Mine backs up at 3am and has never caused an issue. I am backing up around 750gb of stuff and it took a few weeks to upload everything. Once it's uploaded things have been fine. It had done exactly what I have needed it to do. Ar you backing up a workstation or a server? if you are backing up a server you will need to go with a business account with both carbonite and mozy. Check it out and let me know what you think. http://mozy.popularmedia.net/click/share/667760533445c937853469e833d19c71
Devin Johnston
I've been using carbonite at home for over a year and am pleased with the service so far, it does take a long time to finish the initial backup. The problem is that you can only backup about 3GB per day with a standard high speed internet connection, my initial backup took about month and I was only backing up about 200GB. Maybe they have a business plan that allows you to upload data at a faster rate but 1T could take half a year.
Jeff Mottle
I'd thought about and would love to use one of these systems, but was turned off by that initial data transfer. I have over 2TB of data. They should really have a paid option to send in an external drive to get the initial data into their systems.
Stan Zaslavsky
i used carbonite once .. and it clocked over 12gb of backed up data ... i only wanted to back up 2gb, but i must have set some setting incorrectly and it kept backing up and overwriting the same files over and over. in the end i had to quickly turn it off, but not quick enough that i ran out of my bandwidth for the month. so jsut a word of caution - look through the settings very carefully to make sure that you're not backing up stuff you don't want to back up.
