Tommy L
My workstation died. Which is a bummer, but these things happen. I think its the motherboard.... Asus P6 deluxe V2. Its kind of hard to find at the mo. Does anyone know if there's another (sub $300) board I could use instead? Here's the other major components: 12g ram Nvidia GTX 280 i7 1 x SSD 1 x 1tb sata. Windows 7. Thanks! Tom.
AJLynn
Well, Bing shopping search turns up a few sources but none of the major sellers seem to have it. Have you checked with Asus to see if they'll do a cross-ship warranty replacement? That line came with a 3 years warranty. Now, if you do have to buy one, all 1366 boards have essentially the same chipset, it's the extras that are different - still, if you don't replace it with the same model you'll likely be doing a Windows reinstall. Check out the Asus Sabertooth X58 - it will support the parts you've got and it's their reliability model, with a 5 year warranty, and SATA3 and USB3 for $200 - what's not to like? Well, it's not a good OC board. If you OC... for under $300... Asus Rampage III Formula would be my choice. That's got great OC features, and SATA3 and USB3. Slinger
I prefer eVGA and Gigabyte motherboards. I have never had any issues with them and they have tons of overclocking settings if needed. eVGA also offers one of the best warranties, ability to step-up within 90 days of purchase and has top notch customer service support and RMA process if ever needed. Tommy L
Thanks guys, Ill look into my warranty. The thing that worries me is I am not good enough with under the hood stuff to diagnose whether it really is the motherboard. Maybe Ill just drop it off at Microcenter and have them deal with it. I seem to spend half of my time getting the network to work and troubleshooting hardware, last thing I need is to break my own primary workstation. Just seems Im so unproductive at the moment. But Microcenter will probably take three weeks and then say duh, we couldnt fix it.
Slinger
Well, let's try to help you out some: Does your computer boot up at all anymore? Replacement board for a $200-$300 budget: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%20600007887%20600007912%204018&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&CompareItemList=280|13-131-666^13-131-666-TS%2C13-128-422^13-128-422-TS%2C13-131-403^13-131-403-TS%2C13-128-423^13-128-423-TS%2C13-188-065^13-188-065-TS Edited November 2, 2010 by Slinger
Tommy L
Thanks slinger, nope, no boot up. I checked the RAM, replaced the PSU and flashed the BIOS. Then I ran out of ideas. The MB has a power and reset button (red and green) on the board itself. Both are illuminated, neither does anything. When unplugged then plugged in, one of the fan lights flashes on then off, but there's no other signs of life. Oh, and when I first looked, the power and reset lights were 'flickery', but once I replaced the PSU, they are now constant. It was barely perceptible, maybe its nothing. Slinger
Do you still have your manual for the motherboard? IF so, look in the back. There should be a section for trouble codes. You may see if the lights signify any issue. Like I said, I use eVGA and Gigabyte boards and all have some kind of code analysis for you whether by beeping sounds or LED lights. Check your manual and let me know but based off what you stated, it sounds like your board shorted out. You may just bight the bullet and get you a new mobo asap, just to see if the rest of your hardware is ok. I will try to keep helping you as best I can, just keep updating here and I will follow.
