Jim Mann
This one. http://rcm-uk.amazon.co.uk/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=jima-21&o=2&p=8&l=as1&m=amazon&f=ifr&md=0M5A6TN3AXP2JHJBWT02&asins=032171962X Its by Mark Christansen and has contributions from the likes of Stu Maschwitz no less. These guys were part of the Rebel Mac Unit at ILM. Basically, they used accessible tools including AE to create their work. The last version i bought was for AE7 but I still refer to it. When I have a bit more money and am able to upgrade from CS3 to CS5 then I will probably invest in this new version. Jim

Nils Norgren
Here is a favorite at Neoscape, Don't be put off by "Action Films" in the title and make sure to look at the included dvd with extra chapters, my favorite chapter is an extra on the dvd called "The Digital Master". http://www.amazon.com/DV-Rebels-Guide-All-Digital-Approach/dp/0321413644/ref=pd_luc_sim_01_02_t_lh -Nils
Fooch
Hi Brian, This might be a good buy. Not software specific but about compositing in general: http://www.amazon.com/Science-Compositing-Kaufmann-Computer-Graphics/dp/0121339602 Really old but there are days where i still flip through to understand comp work. Btw I teach a studio on comp and I always get the participants to start with : http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/ Alternatively a good learning start is lynda.com. That's a class that needs to be able to view on the net, I would sign up for that.
Fooch
Its pretty basic stuff unfortunately for 2nd year Interior Design / Architecture students to get them to use motiongraphics for storytelling. (I lecture once a week to keep my toes in academia ..) They get 6 weeks to learn AE skill sets, week 1 to 3 is the concept of keyframing and the basics (3D camera, effects etc) Plus they have to finish kramer's tutorials after week1 to understand AE in general. Week 4-6 or 7 is comping, shooting basic greenscreening with keylight, comping and just getting the look right. After that its a free for all to create a film of their choice for Week 12 with storyboarding to animatic to the final film.
