Hello, I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of any tutorials/reading material for me learn some techniques etc. I've been doing architectural rendering for some time but this field has always been one of interest although struggling to find any learning resources on it.

Cheers for any help and advice!

The kind of stuff I'm looking for is to learn techniques and hints to illustrate things like viruses taking over cells etc etc, the type of things you see when an operation is being explained. I'll try searching on this forum using 'medical' or 'nico', any other ideas would be very much appreciated

Cheers!

The main skills to learn are good control of DOF, particles, displacement, self illuminated materials, falloff maps and SSS.

I agree with Tom. There are a few Xray shaders for Mental Ray that could be useful also.

I am assuming you are trying to do image like these, and not medical facilities...

Pete Draper has done a bit on this subject.

And also a great animated piece on bacterial cell subdivision with accompnaying tutorial in 3d world issue 77, might be a bit hard to come by though now. Perhaps contact him.

And I seem to remember my old uni tutor submitted an animation to 'Animex' and it was all about medical visualisation, perhaps contact him I'm sure he's open to questions. You can see his animation here
