Paul Davison
Hello, I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of any tutorials/reading material for me learn some techniques etc. I've been doing architectural rendering for some time but this field has always been one of interest although struggling to find any learning resources on it. Cheers for any help and advice!
Ismael
Doing a search for "medical" and "NICU" on this forum could yield you some very good, useful information to get you started.
Brodie Geers
Can you be more specific? Exterior hospital renders? Interior renders of a guy pulling teeth? An empty nurses station? What are you looking to get into? -Brodie
Paul Davison
The kind of stuff I'm looking for is to learn techniques and hints to illustrate things like viruses taking over cells etc etc, the type of things you see when an operation is being explained. I'll try searching on this forum using 'medical' or 'nico', any other ideas would be very much appreciated Cheers!
Tommy L
The main skills to learn are good control of DOF, particles, displacement, self illuminated materials, falloff maps and SSS.
Crazy Homeless Guy
The main skills to learn are good control of DOF, particles, displacement, self illuminated materials, falloff maps and SSS. I agree with Tom. There are a few Xray shaders for Mental Ray that could be useful also. I am assuming you are trying to do image like these, and not medical facilities... http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-56219398/stock-photo-virus-illustration.html http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-55018342/stock-photo--d-highly-rendering-medical-virus-in-color-background.html http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-60390478/stock-photo-red-blood-cells.html http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-14653927/stock-photo-artery-cut.html
Tommy L
And I would add to that good control of proceedural maps, such as noise, spatter etc.
Paul Davison
yes, that's exactly the type of work I'm talking about, I find it fascinating stuff. Thanks for the advice, I'll start playing around and see what I come up with, so different to what I'm used to though!
Dave Buckley
Pete Draper has done a bit on this subject. http://www.3d-palace.com/xenomorphic/education/doc_microscopic_hair.html And also a great animated piece on bacterial cell subdivision with accompnaying tutorial in 3d world issue 77, might be a bit hard to come by though now. Perhaps contact him. And I seem to remember my old uni tutor submitted an animation to 'Animex' and it was all about medical visualisation, perhaps contact him I'm sure he's open to questions. You can see his animation here http://www.tomelgon.co.uk/vitamins.htm
Paul Davison
Thank you, that's really helpful info, much appreciated. Great animation, that's just the thing
danshewan
Also worth checking out http://www.molecularmovies.com/ Some of the tutorials may seem a little simplistic, depending on what you're used to, but there's some good overall workflow examples for typical medical animations, and some interesting information generally. alias_marks
I've looked into the matter at some capacity in the past as well. I found that there are a lot of good artists around the modo community http://www.luxology.com/gallery/image/?mode=Category&id=14 perhaps you could get some good info off their forums too. thatch
You might want to search for 'mechanism of action' videos (also referred to as 'mode of action') to find some examples. Heres a funky Yakult commercial that shows a few nice techniques.
