Pivot orientation problem

Hey,

I'm having this issue with max that's driving me crazy - when i have a single vertex or a polygon or border, i.e. any kind of selection selected, and i try to move around it in viewport it most often does not use the selection as rotation centre but some other mystical point in space. This results in viewport view not rotating around the selection but instead ending up hundred miles away when using gizmo to rotate around.

sometimes, seemingly at random, it will act properly and take selected vertex/border/poly as center though

but i've been unable to figure out the formula by which max decided which point to use as center.

plx help:-)

Hi,

to me, it's just a matter of changing the orbit option at the bottom right end corner or the UI. Select Orbit Sub-Object.

When you select something in sub-object mode, the view will rotate around the selection.

If this is not it, please re-explain your problem :-)

cheers,

Matt

Hey, thanks for the reply, and yeah, that is exactley what i meant - problem being i dont use the tiny UI orbit thingy at the bottom right of UI because it's much less practical than using the box gizmo at the top right of the viewport - which i use:-)

and with that gizmo it is like playing a lottery when it comes to selections like vertex, poly..., sometimes it orbits selection sometimes it orbits object and sometimes it orbits god knows what, it seems to be changing at random, and i cant seem to be able to figure out what the hell makes it do specific stuff!! halp!

Oh I see! Well, you should write this to Autodesk! they will be glad to see at least 1 people uses this box thingy :-)) I personally hate it because, as you said, it's totally random.

Are there a lot of people here that use the box orbit tool thing? Curious to know.

I use the old shortcuts R for right, L for Left, T for Top, B for Bottom, etc... Much faster in my opinion that having to wait for the view to rotate.

wha! the box thingy is 4x bigger and 2x closer than the tiny stuff at the bottom bar which i totally never use at all......i didnt even realize there's people who use that;P

if only i could figure out why is it so random and it'd be a winner:-)

dont think i could manage with only the 90 degree views tho i really like free rotation and use it to a great extent, but maybe thats just a thing of a habit

exactly : HABIT

I've been using max for 13 years... this thinguy has been added in the past 2 or 3 versions.

If you use a mouse, there the wheel + ALT = that rotates the view

I personally use a Wacom pen table, so I have a shortcut for the "orbit view" option. I don't even have to move my cursor to activate the view rotation tool (not even to the top right of the view, which is still too far away for me - I mean, how many view rotations do I do per day? 1000 at least?? no way I want to move my cursor anywhere that many times a day!)

Anyway, there are a thousand ways of working, but to be efficient, the keyboard shorcuts are your best friends! :-)

Good luck!

Matt

hey, great tip for the alt+ middle button, it actually works perfectly! i even remember using it when i got max but somehow it didnt stick around, but it works great and properly, so i'll just adjust to this workflow instead, thanks!

i have a wacom too but ...seriously...is that even useable in such app? i mean pencil and all that? i didnt even think about using this combination, thought it was there just for the show or something
