jinsley
Most of the reviews seem decent and I played with one for a few minutes last night... I like it and the way it works, but a second opinion would be appreciated... I have read some reviews and a lot of the bad comments seem to focus on the hardware rather than the OS. anyone bought one yet?
Crazy Homeless Guy
I am intrigued by it, but have not been in the store to play with one yet. I listen to Windows Weekly and on there they mentioned that the preferred phone was a Samsung from AT&T. I think it was the Focus, but I like the way the Samsung Omnia looks more than the Focus. Though I am not sure the Omnia is available here. Anyway, if it was the Focus, they were saying that was the most response and the best feeling of the phones that they had played with. YouTube video of the Omnia.... The only problem I am seeing right now is that I am not real found of AT&T in SF. I barely get reception half the time with my iPhone 3g. AJLynn
I was in SF last year and AT&T was basically useless. I don't think I'd change phone platforms without changing carriers at the same time. Verizon Windows phones should be coming soon, and hopefully Verizon iPhones as well. jinsley
I am looking at the Samsung model... and I am up in BC so while the contracts, etc are probably no better, the reception and data service are pretty good no matter were I am... my two choices: http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/samsung-omnia-7-review/ http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/20/htc-surround-review/ I think I am going to do some reading this weekend on which phone is getting the best reviews... I don't really see the need for surround sound on my phone though so I think the samsung will probably win out.
Crazy Homeless Guy
The surround sound slider seems like a gimmick to me. If I had narrowed my selection down to those two I personally wouldn't think twice about the Samsung over the HTC. But everyone has different needs. I swear I can full bars then walk 3 blocks and discover I have 1 to 0 bars. It is incredibly spotty.
jinsley
geez... turns out the omnia won't be available so instead of the htc I am looking at the LG Optimus http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/22/lg-optimus-7-review/ still looks like a great phone... better than what I have now. Crazy Homeless Guy
That is disappointing. The simpler the design, the more likely I am to like it. The Samsung was nice and square. The back of the Samsung was a little busy, but the front was had very clean lines. I am not 100% sure, but I think the Omnia also had Samsung's Hummingbird processor. The Hummingbird processor is built on the same technology as the Apple A4 processor, and is supposed to be quite bit snappier than the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. I think the vast majority f the nicer smart phones are using the Qualcomm Snapdragon. As a side note Qualcomm is working on a 1.5ghz dual core Snapdragon which should make things very interesting. I don't think it has shipped yet, but should soon. Though that probably means it is a min. of 6-9 months before merchandise with the processor hits the market, but that is just a guess. I don't know how long it actually takes to turn these things around, and I am sure companies are already designing handsets with that processor in mind. Also, another interesting development that probably wil mean nothing to you is that Verizon is preparing to unveils its LTE network, which one of the podcast I listen to said that it should be faster than Sprints 4g network. I have a love hate relationship with Verizon though. They have great coverage, but they have never managed to keep their nose out of the phones operating system. They have been crippling features on phones for the last 10+ years. This has always bothered me, and I don't know if I trust them enough not to do that in the future. Anyway, if I were you I would give the Samsung Focus a look too. It does use the Qualcomm processor and not the Hummingbird, but it has a Super AMOLED screen. From what I understand Microsoft employees say it is their preferred phone because of the screen and performance comapred to other Windows 7 Phones (sans Omnia since you can't get it in the U.S.). One thing I am greatly dissapointed with is the amount of RAM these phones have. Fairly miniscule by today's standards.
jinsley
Travis, thx for the great posts... another reason why I rely on the good ol' boys at CGA. I checked and the Focus will be available, but not for another 2 - 3 weeks, except a lot of my co-workers and myself agree that the service provider it is available through is a real f*$#ing bastard when it comes to contracts and customer service. It never hurts to sit on a purchase like this and give it some grace period to fix the bugs... but my old (new) cell is crapping out real quick so I have a feeling I will be going with the LG Optimus from Telus. I have held one and played with it, and it had a nice feel to it... decisions, decisions... in the end I am sure there will be things I love and things that irk me, no matter what phone I pick. I could ask my wife, but non of them come in pink or purple so it would just be another stalemate...
jinsley
LG Optimus 7 Love it. I am very happy with my decision to go for a win 7 phone. very easy to use, very slick interface, no regrets on this purchase. I played with the Samsung Focus this morning, and I decided to go with the LG. The samsung was nice, but not much nicer than the LG and I prefer the service provider for the LG. No complaints yet, but I will post more after a couple of days and I have had some real time to play with it, set it up, and use it at work and at home. jinsley
I know I sounded hesitant last night, but circumstances were that I needed a phone today so I kind of got pushed to make a decision...
AJLynn
Nice. I got the impression that the Optimus is the winner in fit-and-finish and look-and-feel.
jinsley
Nice. I got the impression that the Optimus is the winner in fit-and-finish and look-and-feel. Yeah, it has a slightly heavier feel to it which I don't mind and seems to be more solid.
