Interior lighting advice

Hey,

I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction when it comes to using VRAY to produce those beautiful pro looking light-spills that look like they were made with unbiased renders and just make light look so natural as if it was real.

I've tried a myriad of settings but have only been partly successful in achieving what i wanted and i'm really totally and completely unsure on what i'm missing.....i've been through every possible video training and book out there and all stop shy of providing some hands-on approach to achieving such imagery.

Does it have to do with color mapping? when i just tweak that it will sooner or later burn the highlights like hell instead of just providing a nice contrast range between dark and light areas

Is the majority of this done later in post production or something?

Is it neccessary to use linear workflow to achieve such results?

halp!
