Strange normal map problem with 3ds max & V-ray

Hi,

When I'm using normal maps, the shadows of the objects which use them seem to shift and contract a bit. Is this normal and can this be avoided? Here's a picture to see what I mean:

I'm using 3ds max 2009 & V-ray 1.5 SP2 with Normal Bump in the bump slot
