I'm very new to viz4 and am trying to create a rendered model of the space craft sputnik but am having trouble creating a chrome effect, ive tried using the ray-trace setting as explaind in the tutorial but i find it makes everything go black! so i'm obviously doing something completly wrong, can anyone give a step by step instruction on how to do it properly, any help would be much appreciated :confused:Rich

I'm guessing you don't have anything in your environment for the chrome to reflect. You can add a spherical environment in the environment controls (hit 8 on your keyboard) or if you don't want the image to appear in your background you can add the environment in your raytrace material.

Good Luck!

HA HA VERY FUNNY! Actually I like to refer to it as a space age back massager, like the wooden kind you see at Bath n Body Works.

That was my first attempt at a company logo. The concept was for it to evolve into something more of a robotic logo that would take on different properties as things progressed. I started making a couple of simple animations with it that were pretty cool but....

In the end I decided it was retarded and should come up with a completely new, and professional logo for my company. I like my little sputnik robot, but in reality it has nothing to do with my business at all.

So I'm getting a little help from a good friend of mine who actually does this kind of thing for a living. He's awesome with websites, print, art, pretty much everything but 3-d. So if you ever need any professional help, he rocks. http://www.arcademedia.net The site hasn't been updated in a very long time, but he's got some cool samples on there.

And Rich, I'm sorry for the spiel, but I couldn't help you since I only use Vray materials now.

Well, it is well rendered, which goes to rich's original question.

If Sputnik doesn't relate to your business, what are going towards as a logo image? My logo is a vacuum tube, which has everything to do with my business. But at its simplest a logo is a memorable image to have associated with your company. Sputnik does that.

I'm not sure yet what I'm going for. Right now I'm just putting it in Kevin's hands because he actually has an education on what works and what doesn't. And he said the same thing you did - what is working for my logo is that it is memorable, even though it doesnt relate to anything.

He was telling me a little bit about Saul Bass who apparently was legendary in graphic design and film. He designed logos for AT&T, United Airlines, Motorola, Exxon, plus did a lot of work for the Hitchcock films.

So his goal, for me, is to create something that is professional, creative, and timeless. There is a lot of trendy techno stuff out there which I do like. But he wants to go for something that will look good now and through future trends as well.

Basically though, my only requirement is that it has to be simple enough to watermark on my renderings - whether it be just the logo, or the logo + typography. At first I wanted to incorporate some architectural or 3d element to it, but he advises not to for various reasons....sooo when we finally get something I'll make sure to post it in the APPROPRIATE thread to see what you guys think.
