Can I upgrade a laptop?

Recommended Posts

As a student at the moment I am stuck with my Dell Precision M90 for the time being, however Im having great difficullty with mental ray crashes at render time. I wondered if it was possible/worthwhile upgrading on memory? Unfortunatly the laptop is 32 bit but this can be changed right? Any advice would be fantastic. Spec. follows:

  • Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
  • Currently Installed Memory: 3GB
  • Available Memory Slots: 0
  • Total Memory Slots: 2
  • Dual Channel Support: Yes
  • CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
  • CPU Family: Intel® Core™2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz Model 15, Stepping 6
  • CPU Speed: 2000 MHz

Well, you can upgrade it to 4GB (go to Crucial.com and select your model to see what type of RAM then compare prices of whatever vendors are good in your area - IIRC a lot of people like scan.co.uk and they should ship to Scotland), and a Core 2 Duo is 64-bit so you could upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

Have you purchased from Crucial.com Andrew?

Ive been eyeing a macbook Pro for a year now. To upgrade to 8gb ram (From 4 gb of ram) will cost an additional $400 through the apple store. With Crucial.com you can purchase a total of 8 gb of ram for less than $200. How can they sell it so cheap? Is it cheap products they sell?? Is it the same type of ram (same manufacturer) that comes stock in the Macbook Pros?

I've bought from Crucial, they're one of the best. It's Apple that's charging too much for RAM. I upgraded my MBP to 8GB (G Skill brand bought from Newegg, which is good enough for government work) and the 4GB I pulled from it was Micron RAM. Crucial is the consumer products division of... I bet you've guess already... wait for it... Micron!

No, it supports 4GB, but there's the address map thing - it has 4GB total address space of which 2GB goes to programs and 2GB to system. You can modify this using the /USERVA switch (Google it) - I don't recommend using it with numbers above 2800. But you really want to upgrade theOS if you have the opportunity, 64 bit makes Max and mental ray much happier.

    Hey Andrew,

Is there an equivilant website to Crucial, that sells after market hard drives for Macs? For example: I would like to have a SSD installed in a Macbook, but its rather expensive to upgrade through the Apple store. Any recommendations for where to buy Macbook hard drives?
