cellophane
With the slew of rendering options available on the market with a huge variety in features and pricing - how do you decide on what to use? I'm asking as much for insight into the theories and methods on choosing as well as trying to decide for myself which options to really focus on. My work is done in CAD or SketchUp and when I can get my boss to go for it processed / stylized in some manner.
jinsley
don't forget a good graphics package like Adobe CS5. Max with either mental ray or vray is probably the most common. Lightwave is starting to look like a really good package... I have a friend over in Abbotsford who swears by it. There is some good arch viz work coming out of Blender (free) right now also... The most important thing is to do your research, pick what is going to work best with your budget, work flow and timelines; then to use the trial periods to get a little taste for what you are going to shell out the money for. Max comes packaged with Mental Ray, so you will save the cost of buying a render program... so it is a pretty good place to start. Try the trial for VRAY and see if it makes any difference or if you like the feel of it better.
