Problems with light splotches on edges

Hi people,

I'm here to ask for a bit of help in a problem i just can't fix.

Here i've got a scene (interior) where i designed almost all the items in 3D Max itself, and some i imported from SolidWorks.

Well, i tryied many settings in the Vray configuration window and none of them worked to solve this problem.

I almost every edge of the walls and some furniture, i get this light coming thru and becoming a blurred splotch mixing shadows and points of light.

Here goes the image

I'm using only Vray plane lights, with an intensity of 2 in each of them (resulting in an almost perfect GI) and a standard target light to simulate the sun (i tryied to remove this one and the problem persists the same).

The walls are the native wall system from 3D Max and most of the furniture are from SolidWorks, but i've also tryied to replace these modules for some max-made poligons and kept the same problem.

Any help/tips?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: There goes the scene for anyone who wants to take a look at it. I already tryied to export everything and merge on a new file, but the problem still persists the same!

Hello naeem.3dmax!

Well, i've followed your sugestions and the quality of the image got a bit better, but the original problem persists, as you can see bellow.

I just can't understand where the problem is, since the settings are just the same i always used.

In my scene, everything is setup correctly, as i did on a few others, where the results were good.

If you want to see the scene, here goes the download link

Thanks again for the help!

What are the option under Irradiance Map > Advanced Options > Interpolation and Sample Lookup set to?

Trying different options in this area may help with the problem. Try either Least Square Fit or Delone for interpolation, and maybe Overlapping for sample look up. Or, if you are already using overlapping, try Density based.

Also, I would be hesitant to go much over 35 or 40 on interpolation. It blurs your lighting solution, and takes away from the detail of the light that Vray is so good at.

Hi Crazy Homelles Guy!

Man, i tryed everything you proposed, changing, rendering, changing again, rendering again and all the results looks just the same, no diference at all...

I'm getting really desperate, since this project is now delayed by 2 days, hopefully my client won't pay much attention because of the hollydays, but i don't want to take too much chances...

Please, can anyone download the scene and look at the settings?

I used these setting in every scene i made for the last couple of months and now this sh*t is happening and i don't understand why!

Thanks again!

The main problem with the file is that you were using Photon mapping for secondary bounces. Don't do that. It is fairly antiquated form of calculating GI, and is more difficult to get clean and detailed results with. A typical setup will use Irradiance for primary, and Light Cache for secondary. Some use Brute Force for secondary, but Light Cache gives good results, and calculates faster.

I applied a lot of my typical settings, but I didn't have the HDRI used in the environment slot, so I added a Vray sky instead. The exterior lighting and interior could use more balance.

It is still a little dark, and probably to much vignetting, but those are easy to fix now.

Hi Travis!

Man, i'm a beginner yet, since i work with many things, i don't have much time to put on learning 3D in a depth of detail you seem to do.

I really apreciate your help and, please, let me know if you need anything, i'll be really glad to help.

Now, one last question: All the "blurry" problem was just about the Photon Map? Because i used these exact setting in a few interior renders and got some good results (not even close to great) but never got this kind of bug.

Anyway, thank you so much again! Good to see there is still people interested in a good beyond themselves!

Not a problem, glad to help.

I really don't know of anyone using Photon mapping with Vray. I do have some experience with Photon's in mr, and in general I find them finicky when trying to get smooth light results. I am guessing if you added interior fill lights you probably could have fixed the photons map to be smooth in your image, but it is easier to switch to Light Cache. I believe Light Cache is similar to Photon mapping in many ways, but more streamlined, and better at quickly putting light where it needs to be for a smooth result.

...but in general I would stay away from Photon mapping.
